JIMMY CARTER, THE former US president who rose from humble beginnings to became a tireless campaigner for justice and human rights, has died at the age of 100. Carter died at his home in Georgia this afternoon after nearly two years in hospice care. He had been diagnosed with cancer in 2015. Carter died “peacefully” at his home in Plains in Georgia, “surrounded by his family,” the Carter Centre said in a statement. “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and unselfish love,” Chip Carter, the former president’s son, said in the statement. Carter was the oldest living ex-US president and the longest-living American president too. Born in the small town of Plains in 1924, he joined the US Navy in 1943, graduating from the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1946. In the same year, he met and married his sister’s friend Rosalynn Smith. In 1953, he returned to Plains following the death of his father to take over the family farm. In 1963, amid a background of racial tension and desegregation, Carter was elected to the State Senate. Carter served the state of Georgia as a state Senator and then Governor before turning his attention to the national stage. In 1976, he beat Gerald Ford, the Republican incumbent, in a hard-fought and bruising general election, to become the 39th President of the United States. However, he would never fully command the support of an America bitterly divided and sorely wounded after Vietnam and Watergate. The coronation of King Charles in May 2023 cost taxpayers at least £72m, official figures have revealed. The cost of policing the ceremony was £21.7m, with a further £50.3m in costs racked up by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. About 20 million people in Britain watched Charles crowned at Westminster Abbey on TV, substantially fewer than the 29 million Britons who had watched the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022. The coronation ceremony was attended by dignitaries from around the world, and a star-studded concert took place at Windsor Castle the following night. The annual report and accounts of DCMS, the lead department in Rishi Sunak’s government that worked with the royal household on the coronation, stated that the department “successfully delivered on the central weekend of His Majesty King Charles III’s coronation, enjoyed by many millions both in the UK and across the globe”. It described the coronation as a “once-in-a-generation moment” that enabled the “entire country to come together in celebration”, as well as offering “a unique opportunity to celebrate and strengthen our national identity and showcase the UK to the world”. Then Verhaeghe began seeing more of Trump’s campaign speeches online and his appearances at sporting events. There was even the former president’s pairing with Bryson DeChambeau as part of the pro golfer’s YouTube channel series to shoot an under-50 round of golf while engaging in chitchat with his partner. “I regret saying this, but a while ago I thought he was an idiot and that he wouldn’t be a good president,” said the 18-year-old first-time voter. “I think he’s a great guy now.” Verhaeghe isn't alone among his friends in suburban Detroit or young men across America. Although much of the electorate shifted right to varying degrees in 2024, young men were one of the groups that swung sharply toward Trump. More than half of men under 30 supported Trump, according to AP VoteCast , a survey of more than 120,000 voters, while Democrat Joe Biden had won a similar share of this group four years earlier. White men under 30 were solidly in Trump’s camp this year — about 6 in 10 voted for Trump — while young Latino men were split between the two candidates. Most Black men under 30 supported Democrat Kamala Harris, but about one-third were behind Trump. Young Latino men’s views of the Democratic Party were much more negative than in 2020, while young Black men’s views of the party didn’t really move. Democrats hoped to channel that energy into their youth voter mobilization efforts. “I think most young voters just didn’t hear the message,” said Santiago Mayer, executive director of Voters of Tomorrow, a liberal group that engages younger voters. Mayer said the Harris campaign’s pitch to the country was “largely convoluted” and centered on economic messaging that he said wasn’t easily conveyed to younger voters who were not already coming to political media. “And I think that the policies themselves were also very narrow and targeted when what we really needed was a simple, bold economic vision,” said Mayer.
