megaworld 4x4 SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said linebacker De'Vondre Campbell won't be part of the 49ers moving forward after he refused to enter a game after losing his starting job. Shanahan said the team is still working through the options of how to deal with Campbell, who walked to the locker room in the middle of a 12-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night when he refused to enter the game. “His actions from the game are not something you can do to your team or teammates and still expect to be a part of our team,” Shanahan said Friday. “We're working through the semantics right now, but we'll handle the situation appropriately." Shanahan said Campbell won't be part of the team for the final three weeks. Teams have the ability to suspend players up to four games without pay for conduct detrimental to the team, according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Niners also could just waive Campbell outright, which would allow him potentially to be claimed or signed by another team. Campbell signed a $5 million, one-year contract with San Francisco in March. Campbell had started 12 of the first 13 games of the season and played 90% of defensive snaps for the 49ers but was benched Thursday night after Dre Greenlaw came back for his first game since tearing his left Achilles tendon in last season’s Super Bowl. When the 49ers wanted to put Campbell in the game in the third quarter because Greenlaw was sidelined with soreness in his Achilles tendon, Campbell refused, something Shanahan said has never happened to him in his time as a head coach or an assistant in the NFL. Shanahan said Friday that he has not gotten any explanation from Campbell on why he didn't play. Campbell then walked off the field with a towel draped over his head and went into the locker room before the end of the game with the Rams that almost ended the 49ers' playoff hopes. Shanahan said he didn't send Campbell to the locker room and didn't know why he left the field. “Once I found out he wasn't playing, I moved on to people we could count on,” he said. Campbell's decision left his teammates angered and bewildered. "He’s a professional,” cornerback Charvarius Ward said after the game. “He’s been playing for a long time. If he didn’t want to play, he shouldn’t have dressed out. He could have told them before the game. So I feel like that was selfish. It definitely hurt the team. Dre went down and we needed a linebacker. ... For him to do that, that’s sucker (stuff) in my opinion. He’s probably going to get cut soon.” Ward is one of several 49ers who has played through injury or personal tragedy during a trying season for San Francisco. Ward’s 1-year-old daughter died on Oct. 28 but he has returned and played the last three games for San Francisco. Tight end George Kittle called Campbell's actions “stupid” and “immature.” “It’s one person making a selfish decision,” Kittle said. “I’ve never been around anybody that’s ever done that and I hope I’m never around anybody who does that again.” The 31-year-old Campbell signed in the offseason with San Francisco after being cut by Green Bay in March. He had been an All-Pro in 2021 for the Packers but his play fell off the last two seasons in Green Bay. That led to Campbell complaining on social media that he was misused by Green Bay. He expressed excitement about being with a new team but he never got back to his All-Pro level. UTICA – The start of the 2024-25 season hasn’t exactly been easy for Mike Hardman. Take last Saturday, as an example, for the new Utica Comets winger. Less than two minutes into the eventual 5-1 win at Rochester, the 25-year-old Hardman – playing in his first season with the Comets after signing with the parent New Jersey Devils in the offseason – got bumped by Brendan Warren into a stanchion near the Amerks’ bench. His face took the brunt of the collision with the glass. “My tooth went up into my lip. I got six stitches,” Hardman said with a slight chuckle. “So that’s kind of how it is going right now. I was lucky to not lose any teeth. ... I would have been pretty upset if lost a couple teeth. My mom was pretty happy about (me not losing any teeth).” He missed about nine minutes of game time in the first period to get stitched up – there was “a lot of blood,” he noted – and later scored the eventual game-winner in the second period. That was his 50th career AHL goal. It was part of a four-point weekend for Hardman, a central figure in helping the Comets secure their first win of the season Friday in Syracuse with a g ame-winning goal with 73 seconds remaining in regulation. For his contributions, Hardman was named the AHL’s Player of the Week for the first time in his career. “I feel like my linemates, Adam Beckman and X (Xavier Parent), they were awesome this weekend. I think we were all playing pretty similar. We were playing pretty well in the (offensive zone) there,” Hardman said. “I feel like it is a huge credit to them. We were just talking to each other on the bench and trying to help each out. (The Player of the Week honor) is nice to have. But, I feel like they helped me out a lot. We’re just trying to build off that into (Wednesday) and the weekend.” It was also a nice feeling, Hardman said, after dealing with a hip flexor injury in October and then an issue with his his acromioclavicular (AC) joint in his shoulder. He missed eight of the team’s 15 games between the two injuries. Hardman said he feels 100% now. “I feel like it was definitely frustrating coming to a new team and getting a couple injuries right off the bat. But, you know, the medical staff here was great and they really helped me out,” he said. “Coming back getting those two wins, it was an awesome feeling. We’re trying to build off of that.” Hardman is among the players trying to make an impression in an effort to get an opportunity at the NHL level with the Devils. Hardman played 164 games with AHL Rockford and 37 contests with its affiliate, Chicago before joining the organization. Comets interim head coach Ryan Parent referred to Hardman as “a really strong player.” “He does a lot of things well away from the puck,” Parent said. “When I watch him, he’s a great linemate because you know he’s going to be there. If you’re working with him, he does a good job of managing the game, delivering the puck and making it easy for the rest of his lines and for the team when he’s on the ice.” He’s got a chance to make an impression with the home crowd at 7 p.m. Wednesday when the Comets play their final home game of November against the Providence Bruins. It is the first of two visits to Utica for Boston’s AHL affiliate this season. “Hopefully, the guys will have energy and continue to build on what we have going,” said Parent, who noted the team’s better game management, special teams play and generating more offense by getting pucks to the net. Utica (2-10-1-2 overall, 7 points) continues to face an arduous uphill climb to get back into the conversation with some of the other North Division teams. The team enters this week 11 points out of fifth place, which is the eventual playoff cutoff line in the North Division. Parent has stated the team’s game is trending in the right direction. On Tuesday, the players seemed jovial during practice. “I think the biggest thing for our group is we’re not satisfied with two wins,” Hardman said. “I think we’re definitely a long way out of a playoff spot right now. But, we want to just keep climbing up the standings. Obviously a lot of games left in the year.” The Comets will try to end another extended winless streak, having gone 0-6-0-2 in downtown Utica this season tying the team record for longest winless stretch in a season. And, dating back to the 2023-24 season, Utica is 0-8-0-2 at home. The last victory was March 30 vs. Springfield. After Wednesday, Utica heads to Springfield for a 4:05 p.m. game Friday in Massachusetts. Then, Utica meets Providence again at 7 p.m. Saturday in Rhode Island to close November. While Hardman has gotten the chance to play close to home in previous seasons, this is the closest he’s consistently played near his parents and family in his pro career. He’s excited to have family at the two games this weekend in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. “My parents are pretty pumped to come to the games,” said Hardman, who played two seasons at Boston College. “I think I’ll have a good amount of family and friends at the game on Saturday. I’m really excited to see all of them and play in front of them since I haven’t really done that in the past couple of years.” Change Veteran defenseman Andy Welinski was released from his professional tryout contract, the team announced Tuesday. The 31-year-old appeared in eight games with Utica as a depth option. Parent said he believed Welinski was able to “find another opportunity,” but didn’t elaborate. Jackson van de Leest was recalled from ECHL Adirondack. He’s played two games with Utica this season.

Staci Zampa Team – Stamford Real Estate Agent At Compass: The Real Estate Agent Helping Stamford Buyers And Sellers SucceedParticipation in hockey in British Columbia was struggling in 2021 — the pandemic had dealt a heavy blow to player registrations, and numbers had already been flagging before COVID-19 arrived. “I think there were a lot of families that were impacted at that time,” said Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association president Melanie Earland, whose group governs minor hockey in B.C.’s Lower Mainland, including Metro Vancouver. “The world changed,” she said. Player participation had peaked in 2016-2017 with more than 62,000 registrations, Hockey Canada statistics for B.C. show, falling under 58,000 just before the pandemic began in 2020, then plummeting to 39,056 that season. Rising costs and growing competition from other sports had also been chipping away at youth hockey participation. But that is now changing, with registration for this season in B.C. surging past the 63,000 mark, a rebound that follows a concerted effort to make the game more accessible, especially to groups not traditionally linked to the sport such as new Canadians and Indigenous communities. Tom Oberti, president of the West Vancouver Minor Hockey Association, said his organization had seen record registrations this year, more than 8 per cent higher than last season. “We’re bursting at the seams,” Oberti said, noting the association has had to look outside West Vancouver to find ice time to fit all the players. “The reason why we’ve grown is because we’ve put a lot of effort into reaching out to new, non-traditional hockey demographics,” he said. “For example, we run ball hockey programs in elementary schools to introduce the sport, and we’ve done a lot to reach out to the Mandarin-speaking community, because it’s a growing segment of our community on the North Shore.” Oberti said the association has leveraged Mandarin- and Persian-speaking families already with kids in youth hockey, establishing links to new players through parent groups on social media platforms targeting specific communities such as WeChat and WhatsApp as well as word of mouth from schoolchildren who already play the game. Families new to Canada want to do things they consider Canadian, Oberti said, and they are embracing hockey. “Hockey has an advantage there,” he said. “There are a lot of families that do want to participate in the sport — or who are interested in the sport — because of the way it’s intertwined in the fabric of social life in Canada.” At the Richmond Jets Minor Hockey Association, vice-president Trent Gustafson said while his group has seen about a 15-to-20 per cent drop-off in participation from a peak in 2018-2019, registration is growing again, and players from non-traditional communities make up a big part of that rebound. “We’re up to around 915 to 920 kids playing hockey at Jets this year,” Gustafson said. “We don’t collect (data) in terms of the ethnicity of our members specifically, but I can safely say more than half are non-Caucasian members.” Just as important as getting children in these communities playing hockey, Gustafson said, is the fact that parents new to the game are also eager to volunteer. He said that is a vital contribution to the minor hockey system largely run by volunteers and parents in their spare time. “Those parents are, frankly, just as crazy hockey parents as you’re getting in some of the other cities and towns in not only British Columbia but across the country,” he said. “It’s interesting, the people it seems these days that are almost more willing to volunteer are some of the newer people to hockey. They’ve just fallen in love with the game.” Earland said other efforts to attract players include a try-hockey-for-free program in Cloverdale, B.C., for Indigenous youth, and they are trying to make the game more affordable through equipment programs and other initiatives. “Nobody in minor hockey wants to hear a family say, ‘We want to play but our kids can’t afford it or we can’t afford it,’” she said. She said she wants every child to have an opportunity to play hockey. “It’s a fabulous sport. It offers friendships and teamwork and camaraderie for all of our youth.” Chilliwack Minor Hockey Association president Lee McCaw said his group does not target any specific community for new players, but the province’s rapid population growth and its diversity means more kids being registered from every background. “I think our inclusion for everybody to be able to participate is huge,” McCaw said. “We have a huge First Nations population in our city, and there’s a lot of learn-to-skate programs that are specifically designed for every ethnicity group and everybody inclusively, together and within Chilliwack.” Nathan Bosa, the president of the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association, said even if there are no specific programs aimed at the diverse newcomer groups, sport could be an opportunity to support them. “We’re talking about this as a board a while ago, about having a program for new people coming into Canada and into Kamloops (to) give them a little bit of an instruction on how things work,” Bosa said. “It’s something that we’re going to be looking at in the new year. I think we’ve started to see that the influx is very noticeable, and it’s good. Getting children into sport, whether it’s hockey or something else, allows children and their parents to make friends and it brings them into the community, Bosa said. Bosa and McCaw also noted the impact of hockey exposure in the South Asian community as another factor in attracting new players, including Hockey Night in Canada’s Punjabi broadcast, and homegrown talent such as Arshdeep Bains from Surrey playing for the Vancouver Canucks in February. The Winnipeg Jets, meanwhile, signed forward Kevin He to a three-year entry-level deal this month, making him the first player born in China to ink an NHL deal. Scott Furman, Hockey Canada’s vice-president of growth and retention, said progress has also been made on other fronts, with the visibility of women’s hockey skyrocketing as the Professional Women’s Hockey League drives female player registration to a new high beyond 100,000 countrywide this season. Furman said the upheaval and change in management at Hockey Canada in recent years meant a new approach, bringing inclusion and more programs to help with the costs of the game. He said the rebound in B.C. is symbolic of this change. “Last season, for the first time, we hit 50,000 players that identified as black, Indigenous or people of colour, and that was an 8-per-cent increase on the previous season,” Furman said. “In B.C., I think about 19 per cent of players identify as black, Indigenous or people of colour, which is well above the national average. And the South Asian community represents 4.5 per cent of all players — a 46 per cent increase since the 2021 season. “It certainly is a positive trend, but nothing’s taken for granted. And we’ve got to continue to do the work to make sure that it continues in that fashion.”

BELIN: German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved parliament on Friday and confirmed the expected February date for an early general election after the collapse of Olaf Scholz’s government last month. Scholz’s coalition was brought down by internal fights about how to revive Europe’s largest economy but a deadly car-ramming attack at a Christmas market last week has renewed the country’s heated debates over security and immigration. Confirming the February 23 date for the election, Steinmeier emphasized the need for “political stability” and appealed for the campaign to be “conducted with respect and decency”. A Saudi doctor, Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, 50, was arrested at the scene of the attack on the Christmas market in the eastern city of Magdeburg which left five people dead and more than 200 injured. Interior Minister Nancy Fraser has said Abdulmohsen held “Islamophobic” views but his exact motive remains unclear. In the wake of the attack, Scholz appealed to Germans to “link arms” and to not allow “hatred to determine our coexistence”. The conservative CDU/CSU is leading in the polls on around 32 percent under its leader Friedrich Merz and even before last week’s attack it had been promising a harder line on immigration as well as a rightward shift on social and economic policy.
