lower personal income taxes — but people need more to help with the cost of living. Premier Scott Moe’s government on Monday introduced The , which is to raise personal income tax exemptions while indexing tax brackets to match inflation, saving an average family of four more than $3,400 over four years. “We certainly won’t hold this up, but what we need is much more than that,” Opposition NDP finance critic Trent Wotherspoon said. “We need action now to save families’ hard-earned dollars as they head into the holiday season.” The Opposition has been and axe the provincial sales tax on ready-to-eat grocery items. Two of their emergency motions on those issues have failed to pass in the house. Speaking with reporters, Wotherspoon stood behind a table of groceries to which provincial sales taxes apply, including a cooked rotisserie chicken, granola bars, pre-made salads and cut fruit and vegetables. “Oftentimes people are going to (the grocery store) picking up a rotisserie chicken. This fruit (platter) is taxed; same with a veggie platter,” he said. “These are the kinds of staples that families are relying on. We need to provide some relief.” Finance Minister Jim Reiter told reporters an estimated 54,000 Saskatchewan residents will not pay provincial income tax once the changes are in place. The Saskatchewan Party had proposed the measures during the October election campaign. The legislation introduced Monday also includes a tax credit for first-time homebuyers, along with a credit for home renovations that would provide savings of up to $420 per year. The bill also promises a 25-per-cent increase in tax credits for children under 18 who have disabilities, and for caregivers. It keeps the small business tax rate at one per cent while doubling benefits to help families put their children in sports and arts programs. Reiter said the province won’t support the NDP’s proposals, arguing the government needs revenues for services. “I don’t like taxes. I’d love to cut taxes everywhere, but we have to have revenue to operate,” he said. Reiter said he will write a letter to the federal government to fast-track approval of the personal income tax changes so residents can start seeing a break in January. He said the tax reduction will cost $140 million in the first year. The Sask. Party on Tuesday followed Monday’s announcement with Minister Responsible for SaskEnergy Jeremy Harrison introducing The SaskEnergy Amendment Act, which will extend the carbon tax exemption on home heating — another of the Sask. Party’s promises during the recent provincial election campaign. The bill would amend The SaskEnergy Act and The SaskEnergy Amendment Act to ensure the provincial government remains the sole registered distributor of natural gas for the purposes of the federal Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act. “Our government is protecting Saskatchewan families’ ability to affordably heat their homes this winter and ensuring fairness for those same families who were left out in the cold by (Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s) decision to exempt the carbon tax from home heating oil,” Harrison said in a statement. “Our government will keep fighting until the carbon tax is removed everywhere, on everything, for everyone.” Harrison was not made available Tuesday after question period to speak to the bill. Saskatchewan on Jan. 1 stopped collecting the carbon tax on natural gas used for home heating. The move was in response to what Moe called an “unfair” exemption granted by the Liberal government on home heating oil, which primarily benefits people in Atlantic Canada. The CRA then issued a collection notice in June for $28 million — a portion of the unpaid carbon levies. In response, the province filed an injunction request and judicial review challenging the CRA by arguing that it is unconstitutional to collect from Saskatchewan but not Atlantic Canada. A Federal Court justice on July 5 granted a temporary interim injunction to stop collection, pending a hearing on a formal stay order, both at Saskatchewan’s request. The hearing was eventually adjourned when negotiations between the two levels of government put a pause on efforts to collect the payments. At the time, Saskatchewan agreed to establish a line of credit which will remain in place while it argues The province says the removal of the federal carbon tax from residential SaskEnergy bills is saving the average Saskatchewan family around $400 this year. Due to the expected increase in the carbon tax on April 1, 2025 from $80 to $95 per tonne, the continued removal of the federal carbon tax from residential SaskEnergy bills will save the average Saskatchewan family approximately $480 in 2025, the province says. — With Postmedia Network files

Share Tweet Share Share Email Introduction The history of frozen food tells a captivating tale of innovation and ingenuity. Early days saw the practice of ice harvesting, eventually giving way to the advent of mechanical refrigeration. However, modern freezing techniques like Individual Quick Freezing (IQF) were the true catalysts for revolutionizing the frozen food industry. IQF technology, which rapidly freezes individual pieces of food, has become a cornerstone of the modern food supply chain. The preservation of taste, texture, and nutritional value is superior with IQF compared to traditional slow freezing methods. New possibilities have been opened up for food manufacturers and consumers alike thanks to IQF. Global Resources Direct (GRD), a leading supplier of high-quality IQF ingredients, stands at the forefront of this frozen food evolution . The Science Behind IQF IQF involves freezing individual pieces of food separately using a blast of cold air. The rapid freezing process of IQF causes smaller ice crystals to form. Smaller ice crystals help maintain the cellular structure and integrity of the food better than slow freezing. The benefits of IQF are numerous. More of the original flavor, color, and texture are retained in foods frozen using IQF. Better preservation of nutrients is another advantage. The individual freezing of each piece in IQF foods makes them easier to portion and use as needed, reducing waste. GRD has embraced IQF technology to provide customers with premium frozen ingredients that look and taste amazingly fresh. Leveraging IQF for Quality and Safety Global Resources Direct takes pride in being at the vanguard of the IQF revolution. Business strategies: Can GenAI be monetized? When winter heads our way, bringing chilly temperatures and close, dark nights, my thoughts turn to Cassoulet, the iconic comfort food from southwestern France. It has it all – juicy beans, duck leg confit, sausages and sometimes pork or lamb, slowly simmered in well-seasoned broth, then baked in a wide-mouthed, glazed terra-cotta dish called a . Like any truly traditional dish, there are multiple versions, all claiming to be the “authentic one.” Cassoulet originated in southwestern France. Toulouse claims it — and so does Castelnaudary and Carcassonne — and the recipes vary. Toulouse adherents eschew adding cubed pork. Castelnaudary purists add a bit of lamb, while Carcassonne’s adds partridge. In most restaurants, cassoulets are served in an individual , bubbling with hot juices, and with a bit of duck leg peeking through the top. But at , a vast indoor- outdoor restaurant on the edge of a forest near Castelnaudary, the cassoulets come to the table in family-size , big enough to serve two, four, six or even 10 people, so you can share the dish with your dining companions. I don’t know if Etienne’s even has a single-serving bowl size. I didn’t see one, when I was there as the guest of a bean trader from Castelnaudary. According to him, Etiennne’s has the best cassoulet anywhere, and they use the Lauragais lingot beans known as the Castelnaudary bean. Copious doesn’t begin to describe the cassoulet scene there, with stacks of lined up in Etienne’s kitchen, next to caldrons of simmering beans, ready to be filled and popped into the vast ovens. Here in the Bay Area, we have our own go-to restaurants for cassoulets. Some, like the in San Jose, Menlo Park, Oakland and Larkspur, and in Lafayette, only serve it during the winter months as a special. (Reve will be serving cassoulet Dec. 10-14, for example, and Jan. 7-11; reserve it when you reserve your table.) Others, such as in Yountville and in San Francisco, always have it on the menu. Both Reve Bistro and Bistro Jeanty use made by potter Kathy Kernes at her in Crockett, and they are every bit as beautiful and as practical as those you’ll find in southwestern France. Kernes’ makes in six sizes ($38-$210), ranging from individual to “extra large plus,” which is very large indeed. (Browse the possibilities at Reve Bistro offers take-out cassoulets if you pre-order the week the dish is on the menu. Pick it up — in a takeout container, not a cassole! — then heat it at home. Just note that chef-owner Paul Magu-Lecugy only makes a limited number of portions. “It’s time consuming,” he says, noting for him, it is a two-day process. Le Central’s cassoulet is one of the more elaborate around, with lamb, pork shoulder and boudin blanc, as well as the all-important duck leg confit and slightly garlicky Toulouse sausage. Left Bank uses chef-owner Roland Passot’s recipe (see below) and keeps it simple, limiting the meats to duck leg confit and Toulouse sausages. (Don’t panic. If you’re making this at home, some specialty markets sell duck confit.) The beans are key to cassoulet. Once cooked, they should not be mushy, but hold their shape after the long cooking. In France, tradition calls for either Tarbais beans, a plump, white bean, or lingot beans — a strain of cannellini beans — in making cassoulet. As Passot suggests in his recipe below, you can substitute cannellini beans or Great Northern beans. Rancho Gordo produces , a West Coast-grown bean from the Tarbais strain. Cassoulet isn’t difficult to make. It just requires time and patience. You can make it a couple of days ahead, refrigerate it and then slowly reheat it. That way, there’s nothing to do on the day of but sip a glass of wine while the beans and meats slowly heat to bubbling. Add a green salad and some crusty bread, and you’ll have the perfect winter meal. Or put your coat on and head to one of our local restaurants, where the cooking is done for you. All you need is a reservation. Serves 6 to 8 4 cups dried lingot beans (white kidney, cannellini or Great Northern, will all work) 1 small carrot, peeled and chopped 1 small onion, diced (about 3⁄4 cup) 1 clove garlic, chopped 1 pound slab bacon or extra thick-cut bacon, cut into 1-inch cubes 2 sprigs of thyme 1 bay leaf 1⁄4 cup duck fat (lard will do in a pinch) 2 pounds pork butt cut in 2-inch cubes 1 cup onions, diced small 4 cloves garlic, chopped 1⁄4 cup tomato paste 1 small can diced tomatoes 11⁄2-2 cups reserved bean water 6 Toulouse sausages 1 small garlic sausage 4 confit duck legs, purchased or homemade (see note below) 1 cup panko bread crumbs 1 teaspoon garlic, chopped 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped 1⁄4 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil If you are making your own duck confit, start the night before by rubbing the duck legs with a “green salt” mixture — kosher salt, parsley, a couple of bay leaves and thyme ground together. The next day, rinse the duck legs well, pat dry and place in an oven-safe cooking vessel with enough duck fat to cover the legs. Roast in a 225-degree oven for 21⁄2 to 3 hrs. The night before, place the beans in a deep pot and add enough water to cover by 2 inches. Let beans soak overnight. The next day, rinse the beans well. Add the rinsed beans, carrots, onions, garlic, bacon, thyme and bay leaf to cold water and cook, over low heat, until the beans are tender. Strain the beans, saving the water, and set aside the beans. In a large braising pan, melt the duck fat over medium high heat. Once the pan is hot, brown the pork butt pieces without stirring. When beginning to brown, start stirring, making sure you scrape the bottom if it starts to caramelize. The pork doesn’t need much color, but it does need to cook in the duck fat for a while. Add lots of salt and pepper. This is not a shy dish. When the pork is nice and brown on all sides, add the 1 cup onions and garlic, and sauté until the onions are soft and cooked through. Add the tomato paste, diced tomatoes and reserved liquid from the beans. Stir, using a rubber spatula to clean the side of the pot. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees. Bring the heat under the braising pan up to high. Once at a rolling boil, turn down to low heat and add all the sausages. When they are cooked through, remove and set aside. Slice the garlic sausage in half and cut into 1-inch pieces. Return the whole and sliced sausages back to the pot along with the cooked beans. Continue to cook on low heat until the pork is cooked through. Taste for seasoning; add more salt and pepper if needed. Transfer the beans and pork to a heavy, wide mouth, earthenware, clay or cast iron baking dish that can hold 5 to 6 quarts. Bake at 250 degrees for about 11⁄2 hours, checking at least every 30 minutes. It may require a bit more time. If the dish is starting to look too dry, add a small amount of reserved bean broth or chicken stock. Add warmed duck legs to the cassoulet and make a breadcrumb topping by combining the panko, garlic, parsley, thyme and extra virgin olive oil. Return the dish to the oven and continue baking until the crumbs brown on the top.Rep. Pat Fallon tangles with Secret Service chief in fiery exchange on Capitol Hill

To live with hope is in the very nature of human existence. No matter how tough the challenges in the year ahead, the optimists outnumber the pessimists. No amount of gloom or doom prospects purveyed by dismal economists can deter the optimists. Their confidence in the future is undiminished. In that spirit here is a prognosis for the year 2025, full of tough challenges for the optimists to tackle and overcome. The year ahead is full of uncertainty. Making an accurate prediction is foolish and is sure to fail. The sources of global uncertainty are economic and geo-political. In the latter category are many factors. These include the outcome of the endless war in Ukraine, the escalation of the Israel-Hamas conflict and its spillover into the wider region of West Asia, and the ascendance of far-right parties in many countries, most prominently in Germany. One of the largest economies in the world, the German government lost the vote of confidence in Parliament this month, leading to mid-term elections which will be held early next year. The German economy will contract for a second year in a row, even as it grapples with a rising deficit, need for greater funding of the overseas wars, a shortage of skills and underfunded education. Then there is a rising anti-immigrant sentiment fueled by the far-right parties. Will Germany tilt closer to Russia or to NATO? How will it deal with Iran and its competitor China? Will its economy bounce back? Beyond geo-politics is the economic uncertainty that will be heightened by America’s new leader, Donald Trump who takes oath on January 20. He has promised higher import tariffs, slashing government funding, stronger anti-immigrant policies and a withdrawal from most global climate treaties. His government will be more protectionist. He is likely to engage in international diplomacy purely from an American transactional perspective. At the same time his government will have to fight inflation along with recessionary winds. Meanwhile the American government debt has reached a new peak of 35 trillion dollars. Feeding this debt mountain are higher deficits and an insatiable appetite by the government for borrowing. The interest on the debt alone is about 1 trillion dollars. The borrowing appetite keeps the American dollar currency strong, causing other currencies like the Indian rupee to fall. Weaker currencies cause inflation to worsen. Despite its economic woes, the American stock market clocked new highs during 2024 leading to the creation of more than 150 new billionaires. The twelve richest men in America are together worth 2 trillion dollars now. We thus have a cocktail mix of high inflation, high unemployment, a wild asset markets growth (stocks and real estate) and widening wealth and income inequality. The stock markets have a habit of an abrupt and sharp correction, when collective paranoia takes hold. That bubble burst could happen but is unpredictable. Not many saw the Lehman crash coming in 2008. China is also fighting a slowdown and a large debt with stress in its banking and real estate. It is also trying to transition into the new economy powered by renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and space technology. The other parts of East Asia and Japan are in relatively better shape and have better macroeconomic features. Rising inequality is a global concern and its removal or reduction is one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations. The rise of populist leaders, higher welfare spending is a response to rising inequality. How to manage the fiscal burden of welfare spending is a new challenge. In India too, welfare spending has expanded hugely, both by the Union governments and the States. A recent report by the Reserve Bank of India has cautioned against expanding subsidies and freebies indiscriminately. During 2024 sixty countries had national elections including India, and in most places rising inflation and inequality were big issues for voters. In many places incumbents were thrown out (such as in America) mainly due to inflation and economic hardships. In India too, the State assembly elections to Jharkhand and Maharashtra were swayed by promises of generous subsidies especially targeted at women. We will have two other States, Delhi and Bihar, electing new legislatures, and there is already talk of income subsidies to the poor, women and other sections of society. Who will pay for all of these is not a matter of debate, at least for now. On India’s domestic front there are many things to watch out. Two State assembly elections have been mentioned. The much-delayed national census is likely to be kicked off. A revamp of the consumer price index and the index of industrial production is on the cards. Discussion will begin on the delimitation exercise of readjustment of Parliamentary seats. The deadline is 2026. The sixteenth Finance Commission will finalise its recommendation later this year. Will it assign assured funding to the third tier of government? In many States election to local bodies like municipalities and panchayats have been long delayed, affecting local governance. The Indian rupee is expected to depreciate due to strong dollar policies of the Trump administration compounded by a wider trade deficit in India. The worry about how to increase foreign direct investment will remain. It has been falling for several years. The outflow of capital as well flight of rich people to other countries is also a matter of concern. Indians are expected to spend 70 billion dollars on the “import” of education, i.e. on students studying abroad. This is a major drain on the economy and reflects dissatisfaction with the quality of education in India, or of affordability and availability. On the technology front we will see the proliferation of electric vehicles, greater ethanol blending with petrol, and perhaps the initiation of pilot projects of small and modular nuclear reactors. One big economic development to watch for is the increase in private capital spending and the improvement in rural wages. The slowdown in urban consumption might call for a budgetary stimulus in the Union budget due to be presented in February. In summary a year filled with uncertainty about investment and growth, widening inequalities, the growing influence of geopolitics and conflicts, and ever surging asset markets guided by a loose monetary policy. (Dr. Ajit Ranade is a noted Pune-based economist ) ( Syndicate: The Billion Press )TOKYO (AP) — Troops surround South Korea's parliament overnight when the president declares martial law. He accuses pro-North Korean forces of plotting to overthrow one of the world’s most vibrant democracies. Lawmakers voice outrage and vote to end the declaration, and the president lifts the decree before daybreak. President Yoon Suk Yeol spread fear and confusion through South Korea overnight by issuing his sudden edict late Tuesday, the first martial law declaration since more than four decades ago when the country was controlled by a dictatorship. The declaration, the rushed vote by lawmakers to overturn it and the president's lifting of martial law soon afterward were moments of high drama for an unpopular leader who has struggled with political deadlock in an opposition-dominated parliament and scandals involving him and his wife. While there was no direct evidence presented, Yoon raised the specter of North Korea as a destabilizing force. Yoon has long maintained that a hard line against the North is the only way to stop Pyongyang from following through on its nuclear threats against Seoul. Amid the surreal scenes of troops massing around parliament, here are some things to know as this story unfolds: Immediately after Yoon's declaration the military chief called in key commanders for talks. South Korean troops set up barricades and then made their way into parliament. The leader of the main opposition, which controls parliament, ordered lawmakers to return to the building, where they eventually voted to lift the declaration of martial law. Yoon lifted the martial law decree around 4:30 a.m. during a Cabinet meeting. Yoon's declaration had been accompanied by an accusation that the opposition was engaged in “anti-state activities plotting rebellion.” But he did not explain what that means, and provided no specific evidence. The vague statement is reminiscent of the heavy-handed tactics of the South Korean dictatorships that ended in the late 1980s. A series of strongmen repeatedly invoked North Korea when struggling to control domestic dissidents and political opponents. The opposition lambasted Yoon's move as un-democratic. Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung, who narrowly lost to Yoon in the 2022 presidential election, called Yoon’s announcement “illegal and unconstitutional.” But the sudden declaration was also opposed by the leader of Yoon's own conservative party, Han Dong-hoon, who called the decision “wrong” and vowed to “stop it with the people.” “The people will block the president’s anti-constitutional step. The military must be on the side of the public in any case. Let’s resolutely oppose it,” Kim Dong Yeon, the opposition party governor of Gyeonggi province, which surrounds Seoul, wrote on X. Average South Koreans were in shock. Social media was flooded with messages expressing surprise and worry over Yoon’s announcement. “Martial law? I thought it was deepfake content, but is it really a martial law decree?,” one X user wrote. “I first thought about a war with North Korea when he said he would impose a martial law,” another X user wrote. There were quick claims that the emergency declaration was linked to Yoon’s political struggles. His approval rating has dropped, and he has had little success in getting his policies adopted by a parliament that has been controlled by the opposition since he took over in 2022. Conservatives have said the opposition moves are political revenge for investigations into the opposition leader, who is seen as the favorite for the next presidential election in 2027. Just this month, Yoon denied wrongdoing in an influence-peddling scandal involving him and his wife. The claims have battered his approval ratings and fueled attacks by his rivals. The scandal centers on claims that Yoon and first lady Kim Keon Hee exerted inappropriate influence on the conservative ruling People Power Party to pick a certain candidate to run for a parliamentary by-election in 2022 at the request of Myung Tae-kyun, an election broker and founder of a polling agency who conducted free opinion surveys for Yoon before he became president . Yoon has said he did nothing inappropriate. South Korea became a democracy only in the late 1980s, and military intervention in civilian affairs is still a touchy subject. During the dictatorships that emerged as the country rebuilt from the destruction of the 1950-53 Korean War, leaders occasionally proclaimed martial law that allowed them to station combat soldiers, tanks and armored vehicles on streets or in public places to prevent anti-government demonstrations. Such scenes are unimaginable for many today. The dictator Park Chung-hee, who ruled South Korea for nearly 20 years before he was assassinated by his spy chief in 1979, led several thousand troops into Seoul in the early hours of May 16, 1961, in the country’s first successful coup. During his rule, he occasionally proclaimed martial law to crack down on protests and jail critics. Less than two months after Park Chung-hee’s death, Maj. Gen. Chun Doo-hwan led tanks and troops into Seoul in December 1979 in the country’s second successful coup. The next year, he orchestrated a brutal military crackdown on a pro-democracy uprising in the southern city of Gwangju, killing at least 200 people. In the summer of 1987, massive street protests forced Chun’s government to accept direct presidential elections. His army buddy Roh Tae-woo, who had joined Chun’s 1979 coup, won the election held later in 1987 thanks largely to divided votes among liberal opposition candidates. 'Remarkable' Olivia Hussey who has died aged 73 faced rape, beatings, infidelity and cancer after shooting to fame at just 15 as Zeffirelli's Juliet Olivia Hussey played lead in Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 classic film Romeo and Juliet READ MORE: Olivia Hussey dead at 73: Golden Globe winning star of Romeo And Juliet passes away 'peacefully' at home By MARIA CHIORANDO FOR MAILONLINE Published: 11:47 EST, 28 December 2024 | Updated: 12:00 EST, 28 December 2024 e-mail 10 shares View comments Olivia Hussey - who rose to fame starring in Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 film Romeo And Juliet - died at the age of 73 on Friday, December 27. Her loved ones announced the late star's passing on her main Instagram page, sharing that she passed away 'peacefully at home' just two days after Christmas . Alongside a throwback image of the actress, the family labelled her a 'remarkable person' who had 'lived a life full of passion.' Olivia catapulted to fame when she was cast in the adaptation of William Shakespeare's beloved play when she was just 15-years-old - but winning the role would go on to be a blessing and a curse for the young Argentinian actress. She made appearances in over 50 projects in the span of six decades, such as in Black Christmas (1974) and Death On The Nile (1978). The caption of the post shared by her loved ones read: 'It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Olivia Hussey Eisley, who went peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on December 27th.' 'Olivia was a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her. Born on April 17th, 1951 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Olivia lived a life full of passion, love, and dedication to the arts, spirituality, and kindness towards animals,' they continued. Her family added that the late actress 'leaves behind a loving family - her children, Alex, Max, and India , her husband of 35 years David Glen Eisley, and grandson, Greyson, and a legacy of love that will forever be cherished in our hearts.' Actress Olivia Hussey, who has died at the age of 73, is pictured playing Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 film Romeo And Juliet 'As we grieve this immense loss, we also celebrate Olivia's enduring impact on our lives and the industry.' Her loved ones concluded with, 'We thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time and ask for privacy as we mourn the loss of a truly special soul.' While Olivia enjoyed immense success throughout her life, she also battled multiple difficulties. The role of Juliet would be the defining one of her career, however, while the film's success introduced her to fame and glamour, it also exposed her to terrible grief and self-doubt with two tumultuous marriages, a crippling case of agoraphobia, neurotic panic attacks, food compulsions, pot smoking, drinking and pills. Olivia was born on April 17, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Argentina - and was notably the daughter of Argentine opera singer Andrés Osuna. When she was a young girl, Hussey moved to London with her mother - who was from England - and her brother. In the city, she studied drama at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts for five years. During an interview with The Guardian in 2018, she recalled discovering her interest for acting at a young age. 'I used to walk around the house with a towel on my head pretending to be a nun. 'One day I just said, "I don't know about being a nun. I like pretending to be a nun. Maybe if I was an actress, I could pretend to be a nun and still be me."' In her 2018 memoir, Olivia claimed she was raped and abused by her ex Christopher Jones (left), before her husband Dino Martin cheated on her whilst she was pregnant (right) Winning the role of Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet was a blessing and a curse for 15-year-old Argentinian actress Olivia Hussey (pictured in 2018) At the age of 13, the star continued to pursue her passion and began acting on the stage. In 1966, she appeared in the London production of The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie alongside actress Vanessa Redgrave. Her role in the stage play prompted her to be scouted for the Paramount movie, Rome And Juliet (1968) - which was directed by Franco Zeffirelli. She starred alongside Leonard Whiting, who played Romeo. The movie was a box office success at the time of its release in theatres, and garnered around $38.9 million on a budget of $850K. Read More Romeo and Juliet stars in 1968 film get second verdict in Paramount suit over underage nude scene It also received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. It ended up winning two for Best Costume Design and Best Cinematography. Olivia received a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer - Female, and was also honoured with the David di Donatello Award for her performance. However, in late 2022, both Hussey and her co-star Whiting sued Paramount over underage nude scenes in Romeo And Juliet. In the lawsuit, the two stars claimed that they had been misled by the director to disrobe for nude scenes that were shown in the final cut of the film. Hussey and Whiting said Zeffirelli originally told them there would not be any nudity in the film. However, on the last day of filming, they claim he said the film 'would fail' unless they performed a scene nude while wearing body makeup. 'What they were told and what went on were two different things,' said Tony Marinozzi, a business manager for the actors, in a statement at the time. A judge dismissed the case who found the claims that the movie depicts sexual acts as a 'gross mischaracterisation.' Director Franco Zeffirelli passed away in 2019, and his son Pippo Zeffirelli responded to the lawsuit last year in January, per Deadline. Alongside a throwback image of the actress, the family labeled her a 'remarkable person' who had 'lived a life full of passion' 'It is embarrassing to hear that today, 55 years after filming, two elderly actors who owe their notoriety essentially to this film wake up to declare that they have suffered an abuse that has caused them years of anxiety and emotional discomfort.' Olivia and Leonard filed another lawsuit, but a few months earlier in October of this year, the case was dismissed a second time in the Los Angeles Superior Court. During her past interview with The Guardian in 2018, Hussey reflected on her role in the 1968 film. 'I loved playing Juliet,' she expressed. 'The only part I didn't like was all the PR. It was exhausting, and I was this wild little thing.' In addition, the intoxicating spotlight that overnight celebrity ushered in – something the young girl had dreamed of since age four - also brought on a weight gain that required diet pills morning and night making her hyper and stressed out. The studio demanded she see a specialist for being 'plump', something that had never bothered her - but it did the studio. 'I began to hate my body and this warped body image would turn into a compulsion,' Hussey wrote in her memoir, The Girl on the Balcony. 'Where once I saw food as a great joy, I now began to see it as an enemy. I have never really had a slim body type. It's more buxom or curvy,' Hussey writes, and quotes Sophia Loren who once said, 'Everything you see I owe to pasta'. Hussey's mother quickly put an end to the pills and specialists but 'a seed had been planted'. With all this attention while filming Romeo and Juliet in the Roman countryside and being looked after by a chaperone, Hussey admits she was 'budding into a little diva.' 'I loved playing Juliet,' she expressed. 'The only part I didn't like was all the PR. It was exhausting, and I was this wild little thing'; seen in 2007 in L.A. The movie was released in 1968 to critical acclaim and earned Zeffirelli an Academy Award nomination for Best Director, but the two co-stars claimed they were misled by the director to disrobe for nude scenes that were shown in the final cut of the film and tried to bring legal action in 2022 - but it was thrown out by the judge The once, sweet and shy teenager was no more. She became petulant, a brat, opinionated and quick to judge others as well as taking no advice. Before filming actually began, Olivia says she felt severe cramping and sudden stabbing pains through her whole body, 'lightning bolts of pain' that had been brought on by stress or too much food. It was something she had experienced before – rumbling appendicitis – but the director wanted her appendix out without delay. Olivia was terrified – this far from home and alone. 'After a terrible night of self-recrimination and pain, I woke up feeling better. 'Whether the problem had been stress, exhaustion, or too much focaccia, I didn't know. All I cared about was that I was finally well enough. I could be Juliet', she writes. Filming began in a small town in Tuscany with Hussey wearing what became the staple of her wardrobe, a 'dreaded bodice', so tight that it had to unlaced down the back after takes to allow her to breathe. But it pushed up her breasts and made her look voluptuous. Zeffirelli would take her hands and say, 'Oh, my little Boobs O'Mina', something Hussey hated. But her breasts attracted her Romeo and an intimacy developed between Olivia and her co-star, Leonard Whiting. But the actress writes that she did not sleep with him. They got drunk together and kissed but he was busy dating every Italian girl between 18 and 35 while she drank gin and tonics and intoxicatingly danced the night away in discos in Rome. The London opening of Romeo And Juliet was a Royal Command Performance before the Queen and royal family at the London Palladium leaving the actress nervous over etiquette for the royal introduction The role catapulted Olivia to global fame, but she was left feeling overwhelmed by the exposure and suffered crippling anxiety The movie was released in 1968 to critical acclaim and earned Zeffirelli an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. However, despite the film's success, Hussey realised she didn't know how to cultivate relationships and had no one she could ask for advice. She turned down many viable projects, never learning how to network. The London opening of the film was a Royal Command Performance before the Queen and royal family at the London Palladium leaving the actress nervous over etiquette for the introduction. She broke out into a fit of giggles, walked onstage with Zeffirelli and Leonard and peed on the spot. 'Years later, I would be diagnosed with a severe form of agoraphobia: large crowds, open spaces, and uncontrollable social situations fill me with dread', wrote Hussey in her memoir. She waved politely at the late Queen Elizabeth II seated below and escaped for a wardrobe change. Sitting next to the then-Prince Charles at a long dining table, she complained about how much her feet hurt. After Romeo & Juliet was released, Olivia didn't act for two years - however she later appeared in a number of programmes and films, including The Bastard (pictured, in 1978) The actress had not appeared on screen since 2015, when she appeared in the British film Social Suicide, based on Romeo and Juliet 'Oh, dear. Well, you must go ahead and rest them on my knees, then', the royal replied and they carried on talking about films. It was a year and a half before she accepted another film offer due to her struggle with agoraphobia. However, she was meeting actors and connected with actor Christopher Jones, hot off the film, Wild in the Streets, and being talked about as the next James Dean. Hussey accepted a lunch date that morphed into a romance as well as what she describes as one of the darkest periods of her life. She had been warned by Jones's manager, Rudy Altobelli, that Jones might not be the right guy for her, but she read that as Altobelli flirting. Jones was having a breakdown on the set of Ryan's Daughter in Ireland, distressing cast and crew. He would sit staring off and then abruptly accuse a member of the film crew of stealing from him. His attacks turned on Hussey, who was 17 at the time, in love and trying to understand her boyfriend. One night while talking in bed, he allegedly punched her in the stomach and then held her close and apologised. The production company decided to medicate him and it was up to Hussey to mix it in his morning oatmeal. His mood swings calmed down on some days, other days he figured he was being poisoned because he felt too good. Once, Jones threw the bowl of oatmeal at Olivia, insisting she eat it and laughed ghoulishly before running off. When filming was over, Hussey wanted nothing more to do with the actor and in 1969, she moved to Los Angeles . First stop, Altobelli's home on the infamous Cielo Drive in Benedict Canyon, just north of Beverly Hills and the very site of the Charles Manson murder spree earlier that summer. 'The whole time I lived at Cielo Drive there was nothing strange or macabre about it. I was still very young, and by the time I arrived, all traces of the crime had been erased' – but for the fact that Altobelli had allowed Christopher to live in the back house temporarily. The ground rules were she would never be left alone with him and Jones understood they were no longer a couple. Hussey was now caught up in the Hollywood scene of glamorous parties, and meeting big stars. She writes she never considered accepting any job offers. She wasn't feeling anxiety or pressure and just settling into 'this new, sunnier way of living'. She met Dino Martin, son of singer Dean Martin and his wife Jeanne. Dino was considered a golden boy, nonchalant about his famous family. Dino romanced Olivia, took her to all the famous Hollywood restaurants, introduced her to stars and his best friend, Desi Arnaz, Jr., son of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. The scene at Rudy's was also exciting with stars dropping by. Sally Kellerman, John Savage, Jack Nicholson even came to smoke a joint. Olivia then began a short-lived affair with Terry Melcher, Doris Day's son, a record producer. Rudy loved smoking dope and Olivia joined him becoming more paranoid throughout the day. Dino would join them and they'd head off to satisfy their munchies. But then some dark sinister force brought Christopher Jones into her bedroom one night at Cielo Drive. Hussey thought one of Rudy's dogs had pushed open the door but then the door closed. Jones was hallucinating and hearing voices, twitching while whispering sweetly but incoherently and then he was suddenly punching and beating Olivia for an hour 'all the while grinding his teeth and snarling, his spittle spraying me', she writes. 'Then he raped me'. In 1980 she married a Japanese singer Akira Fuse with whom she had a baby boy before divorcing in 1989. Living between Japan and Hollywood took its toll on Olivia and Akira's relationship and although they remained friends, they later divorced 'In some way, I had always know that it would come to this; that it was only a matter of time before the dam broke and all of Chris's anger washed over me', writes Hussey. She called Dino whose first words were 'I'm going to have him killed'. Olivia's lip was split open. There was dark bruising around her eyes and on the side of her head. He had pulled out a clump of her hair and her nose was bloodied. She didn't leave the Cielo Drive house for two months but Dino visited every day. When she recovered, she went to the gynecologist who confirmed she was pregnant. Conferring with Dino, Rudy, and a psychiatrist, Olivia decided to abort the baby. While lying in a bed in Cedar-Sinai hospital before the abortion, when Dino left, Christopher walked in. He apologised and pleaded with her to keep the baby. She said she couldn't and that he must never come near her again or she'd reveal that he had viciously raped her. She rang the nurse's bell and Christopher exited. Hussey never saw him again. Jones died in 2014 of complications from gallbladder cancer – after three marriages and seven children. Dino had been there to support Olivia throughout her ordeal and she fell in love with him. 'Out of that horror came some of the brightest, happiest days of my life. I was very much in love', writes Hussey. She also adored Dino's family. They tied the knot in Vegas and Olivia was so into the marriage, she even learned to cook. When Desi Jr. started dating Liza Minelli, she and Olivia became close friends as well as the godmother of Olivia's first child. The two couples spent a lot of time together, flying to Vegas and back the same night, getting tipsy on Saturday nights at Madeo's, a hot Beverly Hills restaurant, and Sunday morning hitting tennis balls to dispel hangovers. 'I lived in a strange kind of balance between my newfound love of domestic life and the still-surreal glamour of Hollywood, and it was never boring'. When the offer came in to work on the film, Summertime Killer, starring Christopher Mitchum and Karl Malden on location in Spain for six weeks, Hussey jumped at it. Her contract included special lunches to ensure she stay on a diet. When the movie wrapped in Madrid, Barcelona was the next shoot and her diet included one plate of pasta a day and hours at the hotel pool working on her tan. Once back in LA, she had the taste to work on a bigger film and beat out Natalie Wood for the role of Maria in the big budget film, Lost Horizon. The location was the Warner Bros. Studio lot. A day after signing, she learned she was pregnant. She confided her condition to the costume designer who promised to keep it a secret and keep making her wardrobe bigger. She and Dino had a beautiful baby boy, Alexander Gunther Martin but the marriage turned out to be a flop, as did the film. Dino had begun cheating on her when Olivia was seven months pregnant. 'A light had gone out and we both knew it. If we'd been older, perhaps we'd have gone to counselling,' she wrote. However, she and Liza fell out after they both tried out for the lead role in the film Camille. The glory days were over. Dino was arrested for an illegal gun collection. They sold their house, split the money and went their separate ways. Binge eating, booze, diet pills, sleeping pills washed down with white wine spritzers –all became routine – until Hussey was introduced to Swami Muktananda, a gentle Indian guru who now became the center of her life and helped lead her out of her misery. She still had panic attacks and trouble getting outside of her own head. She met and married a Japanese singer, Akira Fuse, had a baby boy before a third marriage to 'stone-cold rock star hunk', David Glenn Eisley, in 1991. Olivia was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in the summer of 2008. However she opted not to pursue chemotherapy or radiation and instead underwent a double mastectomy to treat the cancer. A decade later, she found the breast cancer had returned when a small tumour was discovered growing between her heart and lungs. Hussey, who is survived by her third husband David Eisely (pictured),was described as a 'remarkable' person by her family when they announced she had died Hussey had been married to David Eisley since 1991. The two shared a daughter, India Eisley (right) who had a role in The Secret Life of the American Teenager In 2018, the actress released her memoir titled The Girl On The Balcony and told People at the time, 'It's been quite a life. I feel grateful that I survived it all'; seen in 1968 She opted to use radiation and chemotherapy to treat the tumour, stating: 'I'd refused chemotherapy and radiation treatment 10 years ago, wanting to avoid those poisons, but last year I had no choice, and they saved my life. 'The tumour shrank, I'm hoping to the size of a pea, and I'm doing well now. I'm healthy and happy.' She last appeared on screen since 2015, when she appeared in the British film Social Suicide, based on Romeo and Juliet. In 2021, she revealed to DailyMail she was 'broke', saying: 'I've had terrible luck...I went from being comfortable to being overdrawn.' Olivia is survived by her husband David Glen Eisley, her three children, Alex, Max, and India, as well as her grandson Greyson.
