Michael Essien’s journey from the dusty football fields of Dansoman, a suburb of Accra, to becoming one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers is a story of dedication, resilience, and humility. Essien, whose career spans top clubs in Europe, rose to prominence through a combination of raw talent and an unwavering commitment to his craft. His love for the game began in his early years, where, like many young footballers in Africa, he idolized foreign stars. Among these idols was Paul McGrath, a legendary defender who played for Manchester United and Aston Villa. While McGrath wasn’t a household name in Ghana, Essien, whose father was a staunch Villa supporter, grew up watching him play and learning from his disciplined style. In the dusty streets of Dansoman, Essien began developing his skills, often mimicking the moves of McGrath, who was revered for his versatility. Although his early attempts to replicate McGrath’s playing style were not always successful, Essien’s resilience never wavered. He was determined to improve, and his hard work eventually paid off when he joined Liberty Professionals, one of Ghana’s respected local clubs, where he began his professional journey. Essien’s breakthrough came at the 1999 U-17 World Cup, where his exceptional performances in midfield helped Ghana secure third place. It was here that European clubs began to take notice of the young talent. Manchester United, among others, expressed interest in signing him, but due to issues with obtaining a work permit, Essien was unable to make the move to the Premier League. Instead, he signed with Belgian side Royal Antwerp. However, Essien’s mother, Aba Gyandoh, advised him to move to France, and he heeded her advice, eventually signing with French club Bastia in 2000. Essien’s time at Bastia was marked by positional experimentation, as the club sought to find the best role for him on the pitch. Although his first season saw limited appearances, he began to shine in the 2002-03 season, playing as a central midfielder. His impressive performances, which included scoring seven league goals, caught the attention of France’s top clubs, with Lyon emerging as the frontrunner. At Lyon, Essien quickly made his mark, winning the hearts of fans with his powerful performances in midfield, including a memorable debut goal. During his time in France, he helped Lyon win multiple Ligue 1 titles, and his reputation continued to grow, with Essien being named the Ligue 1 Player of the Year in 2005. In the summer of 2005, Chelsea made their move, signing Essien for a then-record fee. The pressure of such a high-profile transfer weighed heavily on him, but Essien soon established himself as a key player for the club. Under the guidance of manager José Mourinho, he became a mainstay in Chelsea’s midfield, helping the club secure two Premier League titles and numerous cup victories. Despite a significant knee injury in 2006, which temporarily sidelined him, Essien’s performances continued to be outstanding, earning him recognition as one of the best midfielders in the world. Essien’s international career with Ghana was similarly storied, though not without its setbacks. A key player for the Black Stars in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, Essien’s career was hampered by knee injuries, which forced him to miss the 2010 World Cup. Despite these challenges, Essien’s resilience and determination to return to top form never faltered. His commitment to both his club and country earned him widespread respect and admiration. Reflecting on his career, Essien’s journey underscores several key lessons: the importance of patience, the power of resilience, and the value of hard work. From his early days in Ghana to his rise to prominence in Europe, Essien has been a model of perseverance, always willing to put in the work to achieve his goals. He also credits much of his success to his family, especially his mother, whose guidance was crucial in shaping his career decisions. Essien’s story is not just about football; it’s about the journey of a young man who, despite facing numerous challenges, remained grounded, humble, and focused on his goals. From the streets of Dansoman to becoming a footballing legend in Europe, Michael Essien’s legacy is one of hard work, perseverance, and the belief that no obstacle is too great to overcome. His name will forever be etched in the history of African football as one of the continent’s finest exports to the world of football.

In a taboo-busting move that sparked hugely mixed reactions, World Athletics president Sebastian Coe announced prize money of US$50,000 ($85,000) for every track and field winner at the Paris Olympics. Kiwi Hamish Kerr was among the athletes to earn the prize money with his gold medal effort in the men’s high jump . No other sports federation pays prize money at the Olympics. IOC spokesman Mark Adams said that the IOC’s executive board had discussed the topic of prize money distribution, raised by International Federations and athletes' representatives, on the first day of a meeting in Lausanne.

Such battles played out even during the Congress governments of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi as well. During the Winter Session of Parliament, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman pointed out that lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri and actor Balraj Sahni were jailed in 1949 for speaking up against the Jawaharlal Nehru government. Majrooh Sultanpuri and Balraj Sahni were both jailed in 1949. Actor-director Manoj Kumar, too, paid the price of turning down a "request" to direct a pro-Emergency film as his film 'Dus Numbri' was released on Doordarshan way before its planned release in theatres. As a result, it bombed at the Box Office. He eventually went to court and won the case against the government. The fight between the BJP and the Congress has again turned towards the entertainment industry. Allu Arjun's arrest and subsequent release on bail have prompted the BJP to target the Revanth Reddy government in Telangana. The BJP has now again raked up the instance of Indira Gandhi censoring Kishore Kumar. On Tuesday, the BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said: "Revanth Reddy is orchestrating state-sponsored violence and attack on Allu Arjun. He is completely rattled because a neutral star, who believes in free speech, is loved by the people of Telangana and has not toed the line of the Congress Party; he is not working as per the whims and the fancies of the Congress Party." #WATCH | Delhi: On vandalisation at the residence of actor Allu Arjun in Jubilee Hills, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari says "Revanth Reddy is orchestrating a state-sponsored violence and state-sponsored attack on Allu Arjun. Indira Gandhi stopped the songs of Kishore Kumar and now Revanth Reddy is ensuring that his goons attack Allu Arjun. Congress Party does not believe in free speech," he had. What Happened Between Kishore Kumar And Indira Gandhi? Kishore Kumar was not renowned only for his melodious voice but also for his compelling stories. One such tale of courage dates back to when he refused to sing for the Youth Congress and turned down a "request" to promote Sanjay Gandhi's advertisment for the Indira Gandhi government's economic policy. When Kishore Said 'No' To Indira Gandhi During the Emergency in 1975, Indira Gandhi launched a 20-point programme to promote her policies. Vidya Charan Shukla was the Information and Broadcasting Minister back then. Shukla, who had good relations with many in the film industry, understood the power of cinema and music. He wanted to use songs to glorify Indira Gandhi and her 20-point economic agenda. To this end, ministry officials were sent to Mumbai to convince Kishore Kumar to sing for the campaign. When the officials approached Kishore Kumar and explained the kind of song they wanted him to perform, he flatly refused and reportedly used strong language to dismiss them. This was not the first time Kishore had declined to work for the Congress party. Earlier, he had refused to perform at a Youth Congress event in Bombay (now Mumbai). Kishore Kumar’s Songs Banned Kishore Kumar’s defiance angered officials at the Information and Broadcasting Ministry back in Delhi. In retaliation, the ministry issued a diktat banning all of Kishore Kumar’s songs from being broadcast on All India Radio and Doordarshan. The impact of the ban was felt on the most popular radio programme at that time — Binaca Geetmala. Kishore Kumar was the most-played singer in the programme in 1974, the year before the Emergency (1975-1977), as well as in 1959 and 1971. His ' Mera jeewan kora kaagaz ' was the biggest hit that year. However, in 1975 Kishor Kumar's voice was silenced on radio. In addition to this, the sale of gramophone records featuring his songs was prohibited. Officials believed this ban would intimidate the film industry and silence dissent. To some extent, they succeeded, as many artistes of the time reportedly toed out of fear. However, a few individuals like Kishore Kumar stood firm in their opposition to the government. Other stalwarts of the film industry, such as Dev Anand, Vijay Anand, Raj Kumar, V Shantaram, Uttam Kumar, and Satyajit Ray, also refused to bow. Satyajit Ray, for instance, declined a proposal to direct a film on Jawaharlal Nehru. This was an era devoid of social media, with limited means for artistes (and the government) to reach out to the public. Despite these challenges, a handful of artistes, led by Kishore Kumar, refused to compromise with their principles.

Netflix continues to express confidence that its streaming platform is prepared to handle the massive audiences expected for a pair of Christmas Day NFL games along with the start of its live coverage of the World Wrestling Entertainment's "Raw" next month. Concerns were raised after users experienced issues with buffering and low quality feeds during the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson boxing match last month. Netflix has exclusive rights to stream NFL games on Christmas Day between the Kansas City Chiefs at the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens at the Houston Texans. Beyonce is scheduled to perform during halftime of the Ravens-Texans game, which could create more server traffic Netflix must take into account. It's a major test after the company reported an average global live audience of 108 million viewers for Paul's victory over Tyson in Arlington, Texas. Downdetector.com , which tracks service outages, announced that there were 90,000 issues reported at one point. "It was a big number, but you don't know, and you can't learn these things until you do them, so you take a big swing," Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria told Front Office Sports. "Our teams and our engineers are amazing, moved super quickly, and stabilized it, and many of the members had it back up and running pretty quickly. But we learn from these things. "We've all obviously done a lot of stuff to learn and get ready for the NFL and Beyonce, and so we're totally ready and excited for WWE." WWE president Nick Khan told FOS that Raw's tone and content will not change as it moves to the streaming service, with its first event of 2025 scheduled for Jan. 6. "There's some online chatter about, ‘oh, it's going to be R-rated, or for us old folks, X-rated.' That's definitely not happening," Khan said.
