While still a fortnight out from his Christmas Eve blockbuster, Fox Sports Australia can reveal a group of Goodman’s famed supporter crew, The Mad Bunch, are already taking the big odds on their boy upsetting the undisputed super bantamweight king in Tokyo. The support for the Albion Park underdog comes as the last Australian to throw down against Inoue – former world champion Jason Moloney -- has also bunkered down with Team Goodman, and spent a week mimicking the fighter dubbed ‘Monster’. Himself on an undefeated tear stretching six years and 19 fights, Goodman is looking to rewrite Australian sports history when he throws down against Inoue inside Ariake Arena on December 24. The former Illawarra Steelers barman already has over 80 supporters confirmed for the trip, with suggestions the number could still swell into triple figures by the time all four of Inoue’s belts go on the line. Sam Goodman is set to throw down with Naoya Inoue. And while a crew of those same supporters have already loaded up on Goodman’s long odds, a TAB spokesperson confirmed that, domestically, 89 per cent of the pool is still running for the undefeated Japanese champ. While Inoue is paying only $1.05, the TAB has already taken two big bets of $10,000 on the fighter many regard as the greatest on the planet right now, while there have also been several more wagers of between $2,000 and $7,000 – many of which have been taken out as part of multis. All of which not only confirms the challenge Goodman faces, but has also kept the odds incredibly favourable for those Mad Bunch fans who have backed the Aussie with several different outlets, some of whom opened with him as wide as 14/1. Goodman also still remains a $9 outsider with the TAB, who have taken several bets of around $1500, $1000 and $500. (Photo by Chris Hyde/Getty Images) While the TAB money may be running heavily for Inoue, Goodman is ready to go shock the world after a long run of intense sparring with a group including Australia’s Moloney twins, Jason and Andrew, at his gym, Complete Boxing. Back in 2020, Jason faced off against Inoue for the IBF bantamweight world title, and while eventually stopped in the seventh, has done a strong job mimicking the Japanese star in training. Moloney, who is also fresh off a month of training in Japan, stayed for a week on the Coast sparring Goodman, while twin brother Andrew stayed a fortnight as he prepares for his own fight this Friday night in Melbourne. Given that both twins also competed for world titles in their most recent outings, their presence on the Coast has been a strong boost for the world title challenger, who has also flown in another sparring partner from the UK. “The Moloney boys are great work,” he said. “We’ve had a group of boys in this camp, real high level stuff, that’s put me in real good stead for this fight.” Asked about the sessions, Jason said: “Obviously Sam has a huge fight coming up and we wanted to help out any way we could. “He, Andrew and myself, we’ve all sparred together a few times, and over many years. “I think the first time Sam came up to our gym was before he turned pro. “And now for this camp, he initially came up to us in Kingscliff and then, when the offer was extended for us to also come down to the Coast for sparring, we were happy to do it because we want to help and, of course, get plenty of benefit from it too.” Both Moloney boys also have a knack for emulating other fighters, with Jason, in particular, having spent countless hours watching tape of Inoue. “And I have tried to bring a similar style sparring Sam,” he said. “I was also just in Japan for a month doing some work which included emulating (the champ’s younger brother) Takuma Inoue which also helps.” So as for how you mimic a fighter who may be the P4P King? “Obviously it’s hard to emulate Inoue’s explosiveness – the guy is exceptional,” Moloney said. “But it’s more about the way he tries to bring you onto certain shots, the punches he likes. “Inoue likes hitting the body, has a good right hand, good left hook. “But really, Sam knows what he has to do ... I’m just trying to help wherever I can.” After losing his WBO bantamweight title last start against Japan’s Yoshiki Takei, Moloney is now looking for a return to the ring in the first third of next year – and push back into another world title blockbuster. Andrew, meanwhile, is also hoping a win over Thailand’s Jakrawut Majungoen in Melbourne this Friday night could pitch him straight into an IBF super flyweight world title eliminator – with that vacant crown set to be fought for days later by Willibaldo Garcia and Rene Calixto Bibiano. Andrew’s fight will also be his first since a highly controversial interim WBC world title loss against Mexico’s Pedro Guevara in May. So distraught was the 33-year-old with that decision – which followed another title robbery against Joshua Franco four years ago -- he immediately announced his retirement from the sport.
