Article content Back in the 1950s, Sir Alec Issigonis was charged with designing a small, fuel-efficient car with room for four adults. That was, perhaps, the easy part. The hard part was keeping it within reach of the average buyer. His solution to the problem was the original Mini launched in 1959. While it was just 3,005-mm long, it somehow managed to accommodate four people. The key to its instant success, however, was it was an absolute hoot to drive in spite of the meager horsepower at play. The evolution of the brand continues with the new Countryman SE ALL4 — the all-electric version of Mini’s popular crossover. What’s new with the Mini Countryman SE for 2025? The Mini Countryman has been totally reworked with the SE ALL4 speaking to the company’s ambitious electric plan — 50% of Mini sales will be electric by 2025 and 100% by 2030. The Countryman now has a taller, more rugged look with new daytime running lights and LED matrix taillights. It also rides on a longer wheelbase — up 130-mm to 2,692-mm. Inside, the experience has been totally revamped with a new multimedia interface that runs on Mini’s new OS9. The old letterbox in a round screen has gone in favour of a setup that uses all of the still round screen’s space. In a different move, the SE is identified by a yellow S on the grille and tailgate rather than the red S found on the gasoline-powered units — the E is conspicuous by its absence. Likewise, Mini has dropped the Cooper reference from the new Countryman. What powers the 2025 Mini Countryman SE? While the new Countryman does get both gas and electric versions, it is the latter that’s the subject of this test. The Countryman SE ALL4 uses two electric motors, one powering each axle, to produce 308 horsepower and 364 pound-feet of torque from Rev One. The format also delivers all-wheel-drive. The motors deliver a run to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, which easily outstrips the 6.5 seconds needed by its gasoline counterpart, and it ran the more important 80-120 km/h passing move in 3.9 seconds according to my stopwatch. Keep the throttle matted and the SE has a top speed of 180 km/h. The beauty of the setup is the response to input in immediate and rewarding despite the 2,000-kg curb weight. The electric motors get their juice from a 66.5-kWh battery that delivers, according to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), a driving range of 341-km for the Countryman SE wearing 18-inch tires. It’s rated at 2.4 Le/100 km in the city, 2.5 Le/100 km on the highway and it has an average economy of 2.4 Le/100 km. The annual charging cost is $781. The Countryman SE wearing 19-inchers has a range of 328-km. It is rated at 2.5 Le/100 km city, 2.7 Le/100 km highway and it has an average economy of 2.6 Le/100 km. The charge cost rises to $824. To put those numbers into perspective, the Mini Countryman S ALL4 with a 2.0L turbo-four burns 9.8 L/100 km, 7.3 L/100 km and 8.7 L/100 km, respectively, and has a fuel cost of $3,219. Charging times for the 2025 Countryman SE When plugged into a DC fast charger the Countryman SE goes from 10 to 80 percent in 30 mins. The slightly longer than average time is down to the 130 kW charging limit. When hooked up to a 220-volt home charger it takes about eight hours to fully recharge the battery. The 2025 Mini Countryman SE is a go-kart for five The Countryman SE rides on front struts and multiple rear links. The setup is cushioned, but retains those famed Mini driving characteristics, well, for the most part. When whirring about town the ride is compliant and responsive. Cut loose on a twist backroad and it seems to come alive when in Go-Kart mode. It firms the steering and sharpens the throttle response. Running a snooker table-smooth serpentine country road at eight-tenths proved the Countryman SE is predictable, responsive and a lot of fun. It is true to the Mini name. The best part proved to be the regenerative braking. When in Drive the amount of regen is enough to slow the SE with authority; switch to the Brake position and it becomes a one-pedal drive. In town, this allows the driver to pretty much forget the brake pedal. On that twisty backroad, it allows this driver to link consecutive apexes using just the throttle to control vehicle speed. As a package it delivered a very decent, almost impish, drive. If you do decide to step beyond the eight-tenths mark the 2,000-kg curb weight surfaces and tends to blunt the overall feel and feedback. This not so much a criticism, but the realization a heavy car feels, well, heavy when it’s pushed towards the traction limits of its P225/55R18 tires. The re-imagined interior sits high on the list of upgrades While the interior format has been totally reworked the one thing that has not changed is the centrally-mounted screen for all the information and the “toggle” bar that sits beneath. It features the Park button, gear shifter, start toggle, Experience mode toggle and the knob for audio volume. The format allows more space in the centre console including a place for a wireless charging pad. The rework serves to puts a modern spin on a classic look. The heart of the new infotainment system is a 240-mm diameter thin-screen that uses OLED technology. This gives it crystal-clear graphics. The new Mini OS9 was developed in-house and is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software. This gives the new system some needed sophistication. It’s also fast and has some nifty extras beyond working with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For example, the system offers up to eight Experience modes, each of which uses a different look to highlight the content. The choices run the gamut and include Core, Go-Kart, Green, Vivid, Timeless, Balance and Personal. All house everything from the sound settings and navigation to the climate control functions . Some of the modes change the driving feel. Green is for those times when the battery is getting low; Go-Kart amps up the driving experience. The new, cloud-based, navigation system is fast and precise with latest map data being streamed to the Countryman. The optional augmented view includes additional information and allows the driver to pick a view with 3D buildings. Input a destination and the system displays a charger-optimized route — use the voice control side and say, “Hey Mini show me the charging stations along the route” and the system makes it so. The driver can choose between a stylized Mini or Spike, a cartoon-like bull dog for the assistant. An overlooked plus is the head-up display. It is one of those small screens that rises out of the top of the crash pad. I am not usually a fan because everything is so scrunched up. This one has some breathing space for the information, which is a small, but welcome, touch. Finally, along with the usual safety items like blind spot monitoring, the Countryman SE has, for the first time, an optional Driving Assistant Pro. It allows Level 2 autonomous driving on the highway at speeds up to 60 km/h. The Countryman is the maxed out Mini There is plenty of space for five adults and their stuff. The rear seat has 950-mm of headroom, 892-mm of legroom and 1,392-mm of shoulder room, which is up 250-mm compared to the previous model. There’s also 703L of cargo space with the rear seat upright and 1,591L when folded flat. The all-electric SE can tow up to 1,200-kilograms and has a maximum payload of 500-kg. 2025 Mini Countryman SE ALL4 Canadian Pricing The Mini Countryman SE ALL4 has a starting price of $59,990 and a destination charge of $2,586. Final thoughts Reworking the Countryman and adding a new electric choice will see it remain a popular choice. The defining element, as usual, is the driving experience. It remains as much fun as ever. The bonus is the SE is miserly in its thirst for electrons. Likewise, the multimedia experience is slick and not at all at odds with the round screen — the previous letterbox setup in the middle of the round screen just did not work; the new look puts the entire screen to good use. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Sells 10,955 Shares of Carpenter Technology Co. (NYSE:CRS)President-elect Donald Trump announced a slew of new administration picks on Wednesday, including his choices to head the Securities and Exchange Commission, the IRS and NASA — as well as the first ever envoy for “hostage affairs.” The move comes as Trump, 78, looks to wind down global conflicts that erupted during President Biden’s tenure — in both the Middle East and Ukraine — and make good on his mandate from voters to bring back the roaring economy that his first term ushered in before the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are the major announcements Trump made on appointments on Wednesday. Adam Boehler for Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Adam Boehler will serve in a novel position as Trump’s special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, which will also have the rank of ambassador. Trump noted in his announcement that Boehler worked with him as a lead negotiator on the Abraham Accords, which in 2020 opened up diplomatic relations between Israel and the Arab nations of Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. “He has negotiated with some of the toughest people in the World, including the Taliban, but Adam knows that NO ONE is tougher than the United States of America, at least when President Trump is its Leader,” the once and future president posted on his Truth Social. “Adam will work tirelessly to bring our Great American Citizens HOME.” Boehler, a businessman, was college roommates with Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who led the the Abraham Accords negotiations. After leaving the administration in 2021, Boehler founded a health care investment firm called Rubicon Founders. Trump has already prioritized getting home US hostages being held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip — more than a year after the terrorists invaded Israel, killing 1,200 people and kidnapping more than 250. In a scathing message on Monday, the soon-to-be 47th president warned there will be “all hell to pay” if the hostages were not released soon — hours after it was confirmed that New Yorker Omer Neutra , 21, was killed by Hamas during the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel. “Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long and storied History of the United States of America. RELEASE THE HOSTAGES NOW!” Trump wrote. Billy Long for IRS commissioner Former Rep. Billy Long (R-Mo.) was announced as Trump’s pick to lead the Internal Revenue Service. Long, a 69-year-old certified auctioneer, represented Missouri’s 7th congressional district from 2011 to 2023. He has worked as a business and tax adviser since leaving office, assisting small businesses “navigate the complexities of complying with the IRS Rules and Regulations.” “Billy brings 32 years of experience running his own businesses in Real Estate and, as one of the premier Auctioneers in the Country,” Trump said of the incoming IRS commissioner. “Taxpayers and the wonderful employees of the IRS will love having Billy at the helm,” the president-elect added. “He is the consummate ‘people person,’ well respected on both sides of the aisle.” Paul Atkins for Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission Trump selected Paul Atkins, the CEO of Patomak Global Partners, to be chairman of the SEC. The former president has expressed friendly views on cryptocurrency, and Atkins, who is a backer of crypto, would be replacing Gary Gensler, who has led a crackdown on crypto companies. Atkins previously served as one of five SEC commissioners between 2002 and 2008 in the Bush administration and was one of the economic leaders advising Trump in 2016 through the President’s Strategic and Policy Forum. “Paul is a proven leader for common sense regulations,” Trump said in his Truth Social post. “He believes in the promise of robust, innovative capital markets that are responsive to the needs of Investors, & that provide capital to make our Economy the best in the World. He also recognizes that digital assets & other innovations are crucial to Making America Greater than Ever Before.” Monica Crowley for Chief of Protocol of the United States Trump tapped Monica Elizabeth Crowley to lead implementation efforts for major US events throughout his administration, in the position of ambassador, assistant secretary of state and chief protocol of the US. Crowley will be the administration’s representative for “America’s 250th Birthday in 2026, the FIFA World Cup in 2026, and the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028,” Trump wrote in his announcement. The former Fox News personality served as Trump’s assistant secretary of public affairs in the Treasury Department during his first term, then serving as spokesperson for the department. Gail Slater for assistant attorney general for the Antitrust Division at the Justice Department Trump also said Gail Slater — an economic adviser for Vice President-elect JD Vance and an antitrust guru — will be the assistant attorney general for the antitrust division at the DOJ. The position, Trump said, will allow Slater to potentially break up big tech platforms. “Big Tech has run wild for years, stifling competition in our most innovative sector and, as we all know, using its market power to crack down on the rights of so many Americans, as well as those of Little Tech!” Trump wrote in his Truth post. Slater previously worked as a legal adviser at the Federal Trade Commission and general counsel at the former Internet Association, a tech industry trade association, before joining Trump’s first administration in 2018 as special assistant to the president for technology, telecommunications and cybersecurity. She then worked for Fox and the streaming device company Roku before becoming Vance’s economic adviser and later serving an antitrust adviser to the Trump transition team. “Gail will help ensure that our competition laws are enforced, both vigorously and FAIRLY, with clear rules that facilitate, rather than stifle, the ingenuity of our greatest companies,” Trump wrote. Michael Whatley for Chairman of RNC Michael Whatley will be reprising his role as chair of the Republican National Committee after leading since March when Ronna McDaniel stepped down following pressure from the former president. Trump praised Whatley’s record of leading the RNC through their election integrity efforts and their get out the vote initiative that won him the election. “He is a smart, tough lawyer who put together a completely unprecedented ELECTION INTEGRITY OPERATION that protected the Vote all across America, and a GET OUT THE VOTE CAMPAIGN that delivered the Votes we needed in every Battleground State,” Trump wrote. “Michael and Lara transformed the RNC into a lean, focused, and powerful machine that will empower the America First Agenda for many years to come.” Jared Isaacman to lead NASA Billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman was tapped by the president-elect to lead the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Isaacman, 41, is the founder and CEO of the payment processing company Shift4 and founded Draken International, which operates a large fleet of privately owned military aircraft to train and support air forces around the world. A close collaborator with Elon Musk, Isaacman performed the first private spacewalk in September in which he flew the farthest from Earth a human has been since the Appollo moon missions. “Jared will drive NASA’s mission of discovery and inspiration, paving the way for groundbreaking achievements in Space science, technology, and exploration,” Trump said in his announcement. Kelly Loeffler for the Small Business Administration Former Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) was nominated by Trump to serve as administrator of the Small Business Administration. Loeffler, a vocal supporter of Trump, served about a year in the upper chamber beginning in January 2020 and has recently been leading the president-elect’s inaugural committee. The former Georgia lawmaker has an MBA from DePaul University has worked for several major corporations, including Citibank. She was the CEO of Bakkt, a software company, and a former part-owner of the Atlanta Dream WNBA team. “Kelly will bring her experience in business and Washington to reduce red tape, and unleash opportunity for our Small Businesses to grow, innovate, and thrive,” Trump wrote in his announcement. “She will focus on ensuring that SBA is accountable to Taxpayers by cracking down on waste, fraud, and regulatory overreach.”Lucknow: Kingpins of the notorious ‘King of Lucknow' gang, Veer Yadav and Aman Singh were known for extortion, harassment and coercion, which was revealed during questioning after their arrest on Saturday. The two were arrested on Thursday after their role as robbers surfaced in two incidents of road hold-up on the night of Dec 21-22. Police said that their gang is infamously known as the ‘King of Lucknow' gang. The accused, Veer and Aman, who were arrested in a police encounter, operate this gang. They recruit youngsters into criminal activity by luring them with a luxurious and carefree life. The gang, inspired by films like Josh, operated much like underground cliques such as the ‘Eagle Gang' and ‘Bichchu Gang', targeting young people with promises of a luxurious lifestyle. "The gang comprised members ranging from minors to young adults, including students pursuing BBA and LLB degrees. The leaders targeted impressionable youths, using social media platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp to glamorise their lifestyle," the police further said. New recruits were tested through acts of violence, such as beating or firing at targets, before being inducted. Their operations included extortion from vendors and shopkeepers, illegal land occupation and harassment of women. In one incident, they looted two families within 10 minutes in Gomtinagar, assaulting women during the act. SHO Gomtinagar, Rajesh Tripathi said that the members were being interrogated and other gang members will soon be held. "We are finding their previous criminal records," said Tripathi.

In a surprising turn of events, the Gomoa Central Constituency, a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the past eight years, has been won by independent parliamentary candidate Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus. In an exclusive interview with 3news on December 8, A-Plus expressed his joy over his victory, though he emphasized that his excitement was not simply due to winning, but rather because of the promise of change and development for the constituency. “I am not excited because I have won, but I am happy because Gomoa Central is going to see something new, a change that will bring changes. Gomoa Central will witness development both in infrastructure and in the lives of the people,” he stated. A-Plus, who campaigned on the platform of change and improvement, revealed that the outcome of the election did not surprise him. He highlighted that the constituency had faced significant hardships over the past eight years under the previous leadership. “All politicians should note that there’s a challenge in Ghanaian politics and things have changed. Gone are the days 10-20 years ago when Ghanaians voted because of material things,” he remarked, emphasizing the shift in voter priorities. Addressing the challenges in the constituency, A-Plus vowed to focus on addressing the issues that had been neglected by past leaders. “I gave Ghanaian politicians the opportunity to do what is right and also serve the people, but they refused. So, I am here to do it myself,” he declared. Meanwhile, some constituents expressed their reasons for supporting A-Plus. One local, Stephen, explained that he and his friends decided to vote for A-Plus because they were dissatisfied with the previous female leadership. “We thought a woman could bring change, but eight good years have been wasted, and besides, men can lead better than women,” he said. On the other hand, some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate expressed disappointment with the outcome. “We are disappointed, but it’s ok,” one NDC sympathizer noted, reflecting the mixed emotions among the electorate. The win by A-Plus marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Gomoa Central, signaling a demand for change and a new direction for the constituency.NoneEU rules requiring all new smartphones, tablets and cameras to use the same charger came into force on Saturday, in a change Brussels said will cut costs and waste. Manufacturers are now obliged to fit devices sold in the 27-nation bloc with a USB-C, the port chosen by the European Union as the common standard for charging electronic tools. "Starting today, all new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, speakers, keyboards and many other electronics sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port," the EU Parliament wrote on social media X. The EU has said the single charger rule will simplify the life of Europeans and slash costs for consumers. By allowing consumers to purchase a new device without a new charger, it will also reduce the mountain of obsolete chargers, the bloc has argued. The law was first approved in 2022 following a tussle with US tech giant Apple. It allowed companies until December 28 this year to adapt. Makers of laptops will have extra time, from early 2026, to also follow suit. Most devices already use these cables, but Apple was more than a little reluctant. The firm said in 2021 that such regulation "stifles innovation", but by September last year it had begun shipping phones with the new port. Makers of electronic consumer items in Europe had agreed on a single charging norm from dozens on the market a decade ago under a voluntary agreement with the European Commission. But Apple, the world's biggest seller of smartphones, refused to abide by it and ditch its Lightning ports. Other manufacturers kept their alternative cables going, meaning there were about half a dozen types knocking around, creating a jumble of cables for consumers. USB-C ports can charge at up to 100 Watts, transfer data up to 40 gigabits per second, and can serve to hook up to external displays. At the time of its approval, the commission said the law was expected to save at least 200 million euros ($208 million) per year and cut more than a thousand tonnes of EU electronic waste every year. "It's time for THE charger," the European Commission wrote on X on Saturday. "It means better-charging technology, reduced e-waste, and less fuss to find the chargers you need." ub/giv

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Josh Hubbard scored 14 of his team-high 25 points in the final 10 minutes and Mississippi State pulled away late to post a 91-84 win over a road-weary Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon. Prairie View A&M, playing its eighth straight road game after a season-opening win over a non-NCAA opponent, will not play its second home game until it hosts Grambling in the Southwestern Athletic Conference opener January 4. The Panthers have surrendered 100 points or more in three games and opponents have topped 90 points in seven of their eight road losses. Mississippi State (8-1), fresh off a dominating performance in a 90-57 win over No. 18 Pitt in the SEC/ACC Men's Challenge, got all it could handle from the Panthers. The teams were tied at the break at 44-44 and Tanahj Pettway hit from deep to give Prairie View the lead, 65-64 midway through the second half. The Bulldogs responded with a 16-2 run kick-started by a pair of Josh Hubbard layups and a Claudell Harris Jr., 3 and capped by a Hubbard 3 and a Jordan Tillmon layup to take an 80-68 lead with under five minutes to play. Hubbard hit 4 of 10 from beyond the arc and had three assists and a pair of steals. Harris came off the bench to hit 3 of 6 from deep to add 21 points. Shawn Jones Jr. scored 11 points, Michael Nwoko scored 10 points and grabbed 10 boards and RJ Melendez had 10 points. Nick Anderson led the Panthers with 21 points and four assists. Pettway hit 4 of 5 from deep and finished with 20 points while Marcel Bryant added 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. ROME (AP) — In 2020, it was a run to the Champions League quarterfinals just as Bergamo was becoming the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic . Last season, it was an upset victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final to end the German club’s European-record unbeaten run at 51 games. Atalanta keeps on surprising and its latest exploit was moving atop Serie A following a 3-1 win at Parma on Saturday for its seventh straight win in the Italian league. And to think that coach Gian Piero Gasperini considered leaving Atalanta toward the end of last season. Now, Gasperini has the chance to guide “La Dea” (The Goddess), as the team is nicknamed, to its first ever Italian league title. There’s a long way to go, though, and it should be noted that Atalanta is level on points with second-place Inter Milan, which routed Hellas Verona 5-0 earlier, and that Napoli has a chance to reclaim the lead when it hosts Roma on Sunday. Also Saturday, AC Milan and Juventus drew 0-0 at the San Siro in a match with few chances from both sides. Milan produced one shot on goal and Juventus created two. Atalanta's Mateo Retegui scored his league-leading 12th goal of the season, Ederson made it 2-0 before the break and Europa League final hero Ademola Lookman restored the two-goal advantage after Matteo Cancellieri had pulled one back for Parma. Retegui’s fourth headed goal of the season put him atop that category across Europe’s five major leagues, according to Opta, while Lookman volleyed in a cross from Juan Cuadrado after having two goals disallowed. Gasperini was sent off midway through the second half for protests. But he was smiling in the stands at the final whistle. Atalanta's 34 goals are the most in Italy, and trail only Barcelona (42), Bayern Munich (36) and Paris Saint-Germain (36) across Europe's top five leagues. Atalanta has won two and drawn two in the Champions League this season. Marcus Thuram scored twice for defending champion Inter at Verona. Inter was missing top striker Lautaro Martinez, who was out sick. But five goals in the first half made Lautaro’s absence a non-issue. Joaquin Correa opened the scoring 17 minutes in, Thuram then scored twice before more goals from Stefan de Vrij and Yann Aurel Bisseck. Correa nearly added another in second-half stoppage time but his effort hit the woodwork. Inter's only loss across all competitions this season was a derby defeat to Milan in September. In a dramatic turn of events following the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s sweeping victory in the 2024 general elections, jubilant supporters removed and discarded a controversial statue of former President Nana Akufo-Addo. The statue, which had stood outside the Effia Nkwanta Hospital in Sekondi, was toppled amidst celebrations, sparking a heated public debate over its symbolism and the frustrations it represented. Photos of the dismantled statue, abandoned on the ground, surfaced online on November 7, 2024, quickly drawing a variety of reactions from Ghanaians. For many NDC supporters, the act was seen as a symbolic rejection of Akufo-Addo’s administration and its failure to address the everyday struggles of ordinary citizens. Unveiled as a tribute to Akufo-Addo’s development initiatives, the statue was initially hailed by Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah as “a testament to the president’s visionary leadership.” However, its placement outside the Effia Nkwanta Hospital, which has long struggled with inadequate facilities and poor surrounding infrastructure, made it a target for criticism. Many residents in Sekondi viewed the statue as a symbol of “self-glorification” that ignored the region’s pressing needs, including reliable healthcare and decent road networks. “This statue was an insult to us,” one resident said. “How do you celebrate a leader with such grandeur when basic necessities like proper healthcare and good roads are lacking? Its removal is justice for the people.” The incident reflects the deep frustrations felt by many Ghanaians regarding perceived governance shortcomings, and the toppled statue serves as a powerful reminder of the electorate’s desire for real change. The 2025 CES in the United States is about to unveil a brand-new chapter in the future intelligent home gardening LAS VEGAS , Dec. 28, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- UBHOME, a sub-brand of UBTECH Robotics, announced an intelligent service robot in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
