A historic and landmark Dublin pub, which featured in the season one finale of RTE’s hit crime drama Love/Hate, is set for demolition. Morton’s pub in Firhouse, South Dublin, has been closed since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020 but had been in business for nearly 60 years previously until sold to a developer. Offaly-based firm Bluemont Developments have planning permission to build 100 apartments and some retail units on the one acre site and pre-demolition work has already begun with the erection of hoardings. Morton’s The Firhouse Inn was established in 1963 but there’s thought to have been a tavern on the site stretching back to the turn of the 1800’s. The pub became famous in 2010 when the gripping closing scene of the Season One finale of hit RTE crime drama Love/Hate was shot outside the bar. In a tense exchange Darren (played by Robert Sheehan) meets with John Boy (Aidan Gillen) to shake hands and to put an end to their problems. Darren is then the victim of a drive-by shooting that was filmed 100 metres away at the M50 flyover and for many years afterwards they were regularly visited by fans of the show. News of the iconic pub’s imminent demolition was posted on the Firhouse Community News Facebook page, with the site saying: “The demolition of Morton's has finally started. The beginning of the end of a huge piece of social history of Firhouse. Many a pound and a euro crossed that bar!” It sparked over one hundred comments with many expressing sadness at the end of an era for the locality. One comment said: “So sad ...every Sunday my Mam and Dad would come over for their tea after that my husband, me and my Dad would go to Morton’s bar for a jar and a sing song he loved it.” Another added: “Sad to see it knocked. It was a well known landmark,” while one man commented: “Used to go there to watch Match of the Day in colour. Had late closing but you had to have chicken and chips. Early 1970’s if I remember rightly.” A second pub in Firhouse is also likely to face the wrecking ball soon with plans submitted to replace The Speaker Connolly pub with a development of 55 residential units. Why you should buy the LG QNED80 50-inch Mini-LED TV Not quite sure what mini-LED is? That’s ok. It’s effectively a premium backlight-based technology that builds on traditional LED-LCD tech. It does so by using LEDs that are much smaller and can be used in great numbers. That means you get an image with better, deeper blacks and a much better level of control over your TV’s brightness. With LG being one of the best TV brands around, it knows how to use such technology well. With the LG QNED80 50-inch Mini-LED TV, you get LG Quantum Dot NanoCell technology, which combines Quantum Dots with LG’s NanoCell technology so you get bright and colorful imagery. It has Dimming Pro, which dynamically adjusts the backlight to maintain deep black levels, while its native 120Hz refresh rate helps keep things super smooth. The LG a7 AI processor Gen6 helps to use AI to detect what you’re watching before automatically improving the picture and sound quality. There’s also LG’s Filmmaker mode, which helps you see films just how the director intends you to see them. An LG Game Optimizer provides a similar gaming experience. These are the features you see on the best TVs, so you’re in a good position here. For gaming, there are two HDMI 2.1 ports, so it’s ideal for hooking up the latest consoles. Think of it as a quality all-rounder without having to spend a fortune on a new TV. Normally costing $697, the LG QNED80 50-inch Mini-LED TV is down to $548 right now at Amazon. Matt Gaetz , pushing the fate of any resolution to the yearslong investigation of sexual misconduct allegations into further uncertainty. The nearly party-line votes came after Democrats had been pressing for the findings to be published even though the Florida Republican left Congress and withdrew as President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general. Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., was the sole Republican to support the effort. Most Republicans have argued that any congressional probe into Gaetz ended when he resigned from the House. Speaker Mike Johnson also requested that the committee not publish its report, saying it would be a terrible precedent to set. While ethics reports have previously been released after a member’s resignation, it is extremely rare. Shortly before the votes took place, Rep. Sean Casten, D-Ill., who introduced one of the bills to force the release, said that if Republicans reject the release, they will have “succeeded in sweeping credible allegations of sexual misconduct under the rug.” Gaetz has repeatedly denied the claims. Earlier Thursday, the Ethics panel met to discuss the Gaetz report but made no decision, saying in a short statement that the matter is still being discussed. It's unclear now whether the document will ever see the light of day as lawmakers only have a few weeks left before a new session of Congress begins. It's the culmination of weeks of pressure on the Ethics committee's five Republicans and five Democrats who mostly work in secret as they investigate allegations of misconduct against lawmakers. The status of the Gaetz investigation became an open question last month when he abruptly resigned from Congress after Trump's announcement that he wanted his ally in the Cabinet. It is standard practice for the committee to end investigations when members of Congress depart, but the circumstances surrounding Gaetz were unusual, given his potential role in the new administration. Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., the committee chairman, said Wednesday that there is no longer the same urgency to release the report given that Gaetz has left Congress and stepped aside as Trump's choice to head the Justice Department. “I’ve been steadfast about that. He’s no longer a member. He is no longer going to be confirmed by the Senate because he withdrew his nomination to be the attorney general,” Guest said. The Gaetz report has also caused tensions between lawmakers on the bipartisan committee. Pennsylvania Rep. Susan Wild, the top Democrat on the panel, publicly admonished Guest last month for mischaracterizing a previous meeting to the press. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing and said last year that the Justice Department’s separate investigation against him into sex trafficking allegations involving underage girls ended without federal charges. His onetime political ally Joel Greenberg , a fellow Republican who served as the tax collector in Florida’s Seminole County, admitted as part of a plea deal with prosecutors in 2021 that he paid women and an underage girl to have sex with him and other men. The men were not identified in court documents when he pleaded guilty. Greenberg was sentenced in late 2022 to 11 years in prison. ___ Farnoush Amiri, The Associated Press

Srinagar, Dec 23: National Conference (NC) leader and Member of Parliament (MP) from Srinagar Aga Ruhullah Mehdi on Monday spearheaded a peaceful protest outside the residence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in support of the growing demand for rationalising the reservation policy in Jammu and Kashmir. The protest comes in the wake of the Centre’s decision to grant reservation to Pahari-speaking communities. This move has reduced the open merit category to just 30 percent, with 70 percent of seats now reserved for various communities. The protest, attended by students from various parts of Kashmir, called for the scrapping of the reservation system, claiming it disproportionately favours specific groups at the expense of open merit candidates. The protesters raised slogans ‘we want justice’ as they decried the policy’s impact on employment and education opportunities. The policy has drawn criticism from students, particularly those in medical and surgical training, who argue that it undermines meritocracy and promotes mediocrity. The protest saw participation from opposition leaders including People’s Democratic Party’s Waheed Para and Iltija Mufti as well as Awami Ittehad Party leader Sheikh Khurshid. The NC Member of Parliament had announced the protest on December 22, stating that he would give the government until then to address the issue. “If the matter is not resolved by then, I will join you in protest outside the Chief Minister’s residence or office,” Ruhullah had said. CM Omar had responded cautiously, acknowledging the emotions surrounding the reservation issue. He had promised the government’s commitment to fairness, citing the formation of a cabinet sub-committee to engage with stakeholders. “We are doing what any responsible government would do – making sure everyone is heard and a fair decision is reached after completing due process,” CM Omar had said. He also reiterated that the government would abide by the High Court’s judgment. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also expressed solidarity with the protesters and called for the reservation policy to be revised to ensure justice and fairness. The Mirwaiz also hinted at his willingness to personally participate in the protests, stating that his delegation would attend and that he would raise the issue at Jamia Masjid whenever the authorities permitted it. Addressing protestors, Ruhullah said that there should be no discrimination in the reservation policy, and the policy should be ensured as per the Supreme Court ruling or as per the population proportion. He said that he had already assured the students that their grievances were genuine and he would do every possible thing to ensure justice was delivered. “I had promised the students that I would protest in their favour and today we are here to fight for them. We will raise voices in favour of students at every platform to get favourable results. I know the government has listened to you and formed a cabinet sub-committee. But, I am not satisfied with it, and I would only be satisfied if students are satisfied,” he said. “I don’t want any chaos, and I am not here to divide my party. I will go to every door to seek justice. But, if anyone wants to create chaos in J&K, I will also hit the streets to oppose them.” Speaking on the occasion, PDP’s Waheed Parra said: “We have come here to express solidarity with the students. All parties should join this just cause.” Iltija Mufti also addressed the gathering and said that the protest was not politically motivated. “We are here not to do politics. In J&K, the focus is on Article 370 and the restoration of statehood, but no one is talking about the youth. They have very basic demands like ensuring the reservation policy is equitable and not discriminatory,” she said. Iltija expressed hope that the government, which came to power with a large mandate would fulfil its promises and rationalise the reservation system promptly. CM Omar’s son also joined Ruhullah in the protest. Later, a delegation of five students held threadbare discussions with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who sought six months to sort out the issue.Remembering Neil Flagg: The NBC Sports Mainstay Leaves an Industry Legacy in Sons Ross and KevinBudget Blinds Announces Strategic Changes to Executive Leadership Team

Trump allies work to save Hegseth in key test of president-elect’s relationship with Senate GOPShares of Stellantis N.V. STLA traded lower on Monday. In a move that has investors concerned and confused, CEO Carlos Tavares has resigned. This comes as a surprise because two months ago he said that he would retire in 2026. As you can see on the chart, shares have dropped over 40% this year. However, a potential bottom may be forming, making it our Stock of the Day. Markets don't like uncertainty. This means that nervous investors will probably continue to sell and put pressure on the shares. This could continue to force them lower. Yet, experienced traders can identify key price levels, creating opportunities to profit. Read Also: Stellantis Market Value Halves In 2024: Why CEO Tavares’ Exit Could Take Things From Bad To Worse They know that when a stock heads lower and reaches a support level there is a good chance the selloff ends. They also know that stocks tend to rally after they drop to support. As you can see on the chart, the $11.50 level supported Stellantis in June and July. There is a good chance this level will become support once again. Support levels can remain intact because of “seller's remorse.” Some traders and investors sold when the shares hit support, but when the stock quickly moved higher, many regretted their decision to sell. Some decided to buy back their shares—if they could acquire them at the same price they were sold. So, when the stock eventually reversed and returned to the selling price, they placed buy orders. This large concentration of buy orders caused support to form at the same price that had previously been support. This has happened at the $11.50 level for STLA. Stocks often rally after reaching support, and that could be the case here, presenting potential profit opportunities in the coming days. This typically occurs when investors and traders who established the support through buy orders become nervous, knowing the sellers will move to the highest bidder. They don't want to miss out, so they increase their bid prices. Other nervous buyers see this and do the same. This can result in a snowball effect, forcing the shares into an uptrend. It may be too soon to take a position in Stellantis, but some savvy traders will be looking for a rally and an opportunity to profit if the stock reaches the important support level and potentially reverses. Climate change is causing mass elephant die-offLEDUC COUNTY, ALTA. — Alberta’s government says it will invest up to $50 million to support the creation of a first-in-Canada drilling test site to support technology development in the oil, gas, geothermal and lithium industries. The Alberta Drilling Accelerator is intended to be an open-access, industry-led site where companies can test drilling technologies at deep depths, high temperatures and varying rock types. A location for the hub site has yet to be determined. While no binding contracts have been signed, the province says several companies have expressed strong interest in serving as anchor tenants, including Calgary-based geothermal company Eavor Technologies, Tourmaline Oil Corp. and international oilfield service supermajor Halliburton. The money the province is providing will come from the industry-funded Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) program, which Alberta's heavy emitters are required to pay into as part of the province's industrial carbon pricing system. The provincial government says the Alberta Drilling Accelerator could start drilling in 2026. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 25, 2024. Florida ended a two-game losing streak against archrival Florida State during a matchup with as much action following a 31-11 victory as during it. The game itself might have been ugly, but it was ultimately a thing of beauty to the Gators. A midfield flag planting, an ensuing scuffle and victory cigars in the visitors locker room demonstrated how much the win meant to the players.
