The connections are clear between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers, longtime NFC South rivals. The teams get together for a meeting on Sunday in Charlotte and showed recent signs they can play with any team. "It's an NFC South battle," Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said. "All of them are going to be hard, none of them (are) going to be easy. ... They're playing pretty good football. They missed some games here and there, but they're playing very good football. It's going to be a tough battle." Few introductions are needed on Sunday, as first-year Panthers coach Dave Canales came to Carolina after serving as Buccaneers offensive coordinator a season ago. Canales' prized pupil last season, Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield was with the Panthers for part of the 2022 campaign. "There's some familiarity," Canales said of his connection to the Buccaneers. "Knowing coach Bowles, he's got a really sophisticated system and he attacks each team with a specific game plan. There's some principles that carry over. I know that he's going to have some things up his sleeve." The Buccaneers (5-6) playing a division opponent for the first time since an Oct. 27 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The goal will be notching back-to-back wins for the first time since the first two weeks of the season. Four different ball-carriers, including Mayfield, found the end zone on the ground during a 30-7 drubbing of the New York Giants last Sunday. Mayfield also completed 24 of 30 passes for 294 yards. "For me, the biggest thing was blocking and tackling," Bowles said of what his team did well last weekend. "We cleaned up the fundamental and technique part of it." Star wideout Mike Evans was back in action for Tampa Bay following a three-game absence due to a hamstring injury. He finished with five receptions for 68 yards against the Giants and now gets a crack at a Carolina team allowing a league-high 30.9 points per game this season. However, the Panthers have tightened up their play as of late, winning two games in a row before hanging with the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in a 30-27 setback last Sunday. The outing against Kansas City may have been the most efficient performance of Panthers quarterback Bryce Young's two-year career. Young completed 21 of 35 passes for 263 yards and one score without throwing a pick. "It's not all Bryce, it's the whole unit," Canales said. "It's a collective effort, but he certainly needs to be the voice and driver of that." Wide receiver Jalen Coker (quadriceps), tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders (neck) and safety Lonnie Johnson (personal) were all missing from practice on Wednesday for Carolina. Defensive end LaBryan Ray is dealing with a hand issue and was among those limited. Safety Jordan Whitehead (pectoral) was one of four Buccaneers to miss practice on Wednesday. Evans practiced in full. Carolina and Tampa Bay might as well get used to each other, as the two teams will collide again in Week 17. --Field Level MediaHigh-flying Jets hope to avoid a lag against Kings in L.A.PSV stage dramatic comeback with three late goals to beat Shakhtar

Two days and a pair of time zones after handling the high-flying Minnesota Wild, the Winnipeg Jets will try to pick up where they left off tonight in Los Angeles. Facing a Kings team that’s in the middle of the NHL pack at 11-8-3, the league’s most surprising squad will try to improve on an 18-4 mark as they play the fourth game of a six-game road trip. “This is a team where you’ve got to be patient,” Jets defenceman Haydn Fleury said after the morning skate. “You can’t force anything. We’ve got to play a mature game tonight. Just manage the puck all around the ice. It’s not going to be perfect, but we’ve got to take what they give us. “Play to our strengths, work the puck down low and good things will happen.” This will be Fleury’s second game alongside Neal Pionk, a move forced by the injury to Dylan Samberg, who suffered a broken foot during a loss in Nashville on Saturday. The Jets rebounded with a 4-1 win over the Wild on Monday, a game in which they were roundly outplayed for the first 30 minutes but were kept in it by goalie Connor Hellebuyck. Defenceman Ville Heinola made his season debut in that one, on a third pairing with Colin Miller. Head coach Scott Arniel planned to go with the same pairings against the Kings. “There was lots of learning on the fly,” Arniel said. “But as the game went on they got stronger and started to work off each other.” The way the Jets took over in the final 30 minutes is how they would like to start tonight. “They’re a pretty responsible group,” Arniel said of the Kings. “They’ve got a hard-working forward group ... they really do a good job of boxing out and protecting the guts of the ice. That’ll be a grind for us. But at the same time we faced Minnesota the other night, the same kind of things. “You’ve got to create your offence by using your quickness, getting inside and looking for those second, third opportunities.” After a long flight from Minnesota and a day off on Tuesday, Arniel is looking for his team to shake off any jet lag or time-zone brain fog and get right back to work. “When you get to the game, that part can’t even be in your head.” One player who’s getting his chances but not scoring is forward Cole Perfetti After scoring four goals in his first 12 games, Perfetti has gone 10 games without. His coach isn’t worried about it and says the 22-year-old isn’t, either. “You still have to play the game the right way,” Arniel said, adding Perfetti is doing so. “If all you do is go out there thinking about goals, you’re going to have a long night. He learned a little bit of a lesson last year. He went through a stretch. That’s like everything about his career. He’s learning every year and every game. “He’s not as shook up right now about it as maybe he was in the past.” Perfetti went 23 games without a goal late last season, still finishing with a career-high 19 in 71 games before being scratched from the lineup for all but one playoff game. “His game isn’t just all centred around scoring goals,” Arniel said. “He’s had some Grade As. Sooner or later they’ll go in ... hopefully he gets a crazy bounce or an empty-netter to go in and that gets him feeling good and going again.” Still leading the league, the Jets will wrap up their road trip with games in Las Vegas on Friday and Dallas on Sunday afternoon. paul.friesen@kleinmedia.ca X: @friesensunmedia

NoneChina and Pakistan: A common journey of building up climate resilience and justice Pakistan has witnessed extreme temperatures and excessive rainfall on multiple occasions Chinese Consul General in Lahore In recent years, the impact of climate change and environmental issues on Pakistan have been increasingly challenging. Pakistan has witnessed extreme temperatures and excessive rainfall on multiple occasions. In 2022, Pakistan suffered a once-in-a-century flood, which caused huge casualties and property losses. In 2023, Pakistan was listed as one of the four countries with the worst air quality in the world. In 2024, Lahore was rated as the most polluted city in the world for winter season. According to the UN report, despite contributing less than one percent of global emissions, the Pakistanis face a staggering risk of climate-related mortality 15 times higher than the world average. Frequent extreme weather, high temperatures and droughts, water shortages, air pollution and other issues have posed serious threats to Pakistan’s agriculture, food security, productivity, and people’s livelihood. The Pakistani government has been actively taking measures to address these challenges. For example, the Punjab government has vigorously formulated policies, action plans and introduced new technologies, calling for cross-border cooperation to tackle the smog in Lahore. During this process, China has provided all possible support to Punjab, such as dispatching an environmental experts team to Lahore to conduct on-site research and submitted policy recommendations. Chinese companies are brought in to build air quality monitoring stations in the province. During the maiden official visit of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz of the Punjab Province to China, a special meeting was arranged between Minister Huang Runqiu of Ecology and Environment of China and the Chief Minister, and both sides reached consensus on air pollution prevention and control, new energy industries and green low-carbon development. As one of the first contracting parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and one of the pioneering countries to sign the Paris Agreement, China always adheres to true multilateralism, and the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities”. During COP29, China released Action Plan on Early Warning for Climate Change Adaptation (2025-2027), pledging to share technologies with developing countries and jointly build a climate risk monitoring and warning platform. As part of this action plan, a customized cloud-based early warning system in Pakistan will soon be launched and will effectively enhance its capabilities in disaster prevention, reduction and climate change response. As Pakistan’s good neighbor, close friend, iron brother and trusted partner, China is of the view that cooperation on climate change and environmental challenges is imperative to both countries. This cooperation will help promote socioeconomic and ecological sustainable development, drive green transformation of industries, improve people’s livelihood, and mitigate natural disasters. This cooperation is also conducive to the high quality development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, enhancing connectivity, strengthening climate resilience, and maintaining regional peace and stability. China-Pakistan cooperation can contribute to enhance global climate governance, and facilitate the achievement of the sustainable development goals for the global community and the developing countries in particular. The cooperation between China and Pakistan in addressing climate change and environmental issues has a solid foundation and broad prospects. China has established a sound “1+N” dual-carbon policy system, optimized the energy structure and contributed nearly a quarter of the global greening area over the past 20 years, with the forest stock reaching 19.493 billion cubic meters. China’s expertise, technology and commitment to address climate change and environmental hazards have been widely recognized by the international community. I believe that these experiences will provide beneficial references for Pakistan in its policy formulation, industrial structure adjustment, energy transformation, ecological and environmental education. I believe that China-Pakistan cooperation on climate change and environment can set an example for other developing countries to follow by making more concerted efforts to tackle the global challenges, and create a better future for our posterity. I believe that this cooperation can also serve as a lesson and a reminder to the developed countries for taking stock of their emission history, shouldering more responsibilities and fulfilling the climate financing promises made to the developing countries, breaking down the green-tech barriers and providing technical support and capacity-building empowerment to the developing countries in fighting this existential threat faced by the humanity. The Colombo stock market sustained its gains yesterday fuelled by banks amidst high turnover.
